Ann was born in Vincennes, Indiana on March 23, 1931 to her parents George and Mary McCormack. She is the dear sister of John (Patricia Lee) and the late Gene Randall (Pat) McCormack, dear aunt of 3 nieces, 3 nephews and several great nieces and nephews.

After high school in Vincennes, she attended nurses training at St. Vincent’s Hospital, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Followed by getting her masters degree in psychiatric nursing at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. She eventually moved to St. Louis, taking a position as an assistant in the planning department at DePaul Hospital then located on North Kingshighway. That is when we first met, it was the early 70’s.

I left DePaul to attend St. Louis University graduate school getting a masters degree in health care administration but we maintained our friendship. Ann also left DePaul going to work for the Veterans Administration Hospitals in St. Louis, as a federal employee. Her job was two-fold, being a nurse, she worked with the St. Louis University school of nursing faculty, coordinating the student nurses clinical assignments at both John Cochran and Jefferson Barracks Hospitals.

Secondly, she was a very good educator and developed a customer service program for nurses aides to enable them to more effectively relate to both patients and family members She and a colleague toured the country presenting the program at multiple Veterans Hospitals until her retirement.

Ann’s hobbies were her dogs and watching television; the later habit she inherited from her mother. She frequently told the story of her mother and a neighbor going shopping in Vincennes and when it was time for their favorite soap operas to come on TV, they went into a furniture store, made themselves comfortable in display chairs and proceeded to watch them.

But her real passions were her dogs who were All American Kennel Club [AKC] registered. She has bred and shown Scottish Terriers for some 30 years, her favorite being Miss Ellie. Ann has also had a Bichon Frise, Kizzy and a Havanese, Drake. All were entered in area dog shows and sometimes came home with a blue ribbon or a trophy cup. She took all three dogs through obedience, canine good citizen, and certified therapy training. Upon completion of training they all were certified and allowed to visit nursing homes on a regular basis. She made visits until her health would not permit. A fun story she often told was about a resident who asked Ann to put Kizzy on her bed so she could pet her and asked Ann what the dog did all day long. Ann replied “Oh, she looks out the window, plays with her toys, takes naps and watches soap operas with me.” The resident asked if Kizzy watched the “Bold and the Beautiful” and when Ann replied ‘No’ she said “well bring her back this afternoon and she can watch it with me.”

I knew Ann for some 40 years. There were originally four of us, all nurses, who shared a four-bedroom, 2 story home. They were wonderful friends and I will cherish memories of them forever.

Ann donated her body to St. Louis University. A memorial mass will be held at a later date at St. Gerard Majella Catholic Church, Kirkwood, MO.
