Michael G O’Connor

On June 8th, 2021, our dear brother Michael passed away at Sisters Mission. Born in St. Louis (March 24, 1939), he was the eldest of five children born to Anabel Kirkpatrick Burke and John Vincent O’Connor. Mike attended CBC high school, excelling in multiple sports, before heading to Houston, Texas where he earned a B.A. and an M.A. in literature at St. Thomas University. Mike continued to call Texas home for 25 years, given its proximity to the Mexican culture, history and art that he loved so much. In that community, he also shared wonderful times with the O’Connor-Byrne part of the family (Aunt Franny & Uncle Bill) and their children, Bill, Jr. (Marcia Marquer) and Patricia (Charles) Perry, nurtured his love of jazz, and continued upping his tennis game.

On his return to St. Louis, Mike worked as an addiction therapist for many years, supporting countless individuals in their journey towards better health. Back in Missouri, Mike loved conversing with old and new friends about music, art and literature, and family events with his many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. He loved visiting family in Montreal. All who knew Mike, relished his dry wit, his attentiveness to each person, his ability to really listen, his keen intelligence, and the deep enjoyment he had for the little things that make life more fun (Ted Drewe’s frozen custard, reminiscing with his siblings, a good book, Irish concerts sung by Maureen & Tom’s family, and holding his grand-nieces and grand-nephews in his arms).

Michael is survived by his siblings Dennis (Anne McNicholl), Maureen (Tom) Kavanaugh, Kathleen, Patty (Emmett Francoeur), many nieces and nephews, grand-nephews and grand-nieces, extended family in Canada and the U.S., and his dear friend, Steve Duffe. Our family is enormously grateful for the loving care received at Sisters Mission where Mike lived his last years. Mike entered into everlasting life after receiving the Sacrament of the Sick. At Mike’s request, there will be no visitation. Burial at Calvary Cemetery is private, for family and close friends, who will be contacted with details. In memory of Mike, enjoy some ice cream and a good book.
