August 12, 1955- October 24, 2022

Joseph “Joe” John Gerwitz, 67, died October 24, 2022 with family by his side in St. Louis, MO.

Joe was born August 12, 1955, to Sophie and Andrew Gerwitz Sr. in St. Louis, MO. He graduated from McCluer High School in 1973. He continued his education at UMSL, earning his BS in Accounting in 1979. What he didn’t account for was how much he would enjoy being a second generation letter carrier, a career he retired from in 2012.

He is survived by his beloved daughters, Jessica (Mark) Winterowd and Laura (Faraz) Zarghami; father, Andrew Gerwitz Sr; sisters Nancy Crum, Cathy Hicks, and Judy McCabe; brother Andy (Jeanne) Gerwitz; nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, Henry Winterowd & Zara Zarghami.

Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Sophie, and best friend Gary Cox.

He will be remembered for his love of watching Jeopardy, being an avid reader, enjoying soccer games, cheering on the Cardinals, and making family laugh. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was a loving man who loved his family. You could tell his mood by the shirt he was wearing. One of the things we talked about doing was taking a road trip to Bangor, Maine and touch the gates to Stephen King’s home. You are missed brother. Your legacy lives on within us and Jessie, Laura, Henry and Zara. And the countless others your life has touched

Joe was a great brother to grow up with. The adventures we shared! I choose to remember Joe by his boundless love and affection for his 2 wonderful daughters Jessica and Laura. This what I cherish most.

Jessica and Laura. I am so saddened to hear of the passing of your father. I was on vacation in Europe when this happened, and did not hear about it until yesterday evening–upon my return home to the States. Joe will be truly missed. He had such a great sense of humor, and enjoyed his attendance at the Rep Theater. I so enjoyed knowing him and being around him. He was special.

May you find peace in the days to come.

I will always have a special place in my heart for Joe. He was one of the good guys. He was a devoted dad. Gary always said the best thing that ever happened to Joe were his daughters. He loved Jessie and Laura beyond measure. He and Gary were like brothers and there was always laughter when they were together. They teased each other, showing no mercy, and were always there for each other. I I loved him. The world is a better place because Joe Gerwitz was in it.

He was a great friend when I lived in St Louis. Sorry we lost touch. Hope he found Jesus.
