William “Bill” Hendrix
William “Bill” Hendrix, a beloved family man, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Saint Louis University Hospital on Tuesday, April 25, 2023. He was 85 and lived a life full of joy, love, and generosity.
Just two weeks before his passing, William was diagnosed with leukemia. Despite being in the ICU, he remained strong and managed to help his family and friends laugh through the tears and reunite to make new memories. His room was never empty, and his loved ones remained by his side to return the devotion and support he showed them throughout the years. The hospital staff admired him for his resilience and kind spirit.
Born April 2, 1938, to Norman “Slim” and Bertha “Maude” Hendrix, he was raised in St Louis City and on the family farm in St Charles. Preceded in death by his parents and 7 siblings: Jewell Marie, Mary “Joyce”, Bertha “Alma”, Anna “Lucille”, Lawrence Elbert, Richard “Monk” Monroe, and Betty Jane.
He had many passions in life, including fishing, which he would do whenever possible. He was a hard-working man who could fix anything that was broken. He took great pride in his work as a steelworker and was always an active member of the Local 688 Teamsters union, even after retirement. One of his greatest passions was making life better for those around him.
Bill was a generous, kind hearted, and family-oriented man who would do anything for his loved ones. He gave everything he had to ensure their happiness and well-being. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and go the extra mile to make sure those around him were comfortable. He was also known for his sense of humor and ability to make people laugh even during tough times. He was a hero to many, fearless in the face of adversity, and always spoke his mind, even if it was difficult.
William was a devoted husband to his wife Patricia. They spent over 61 years together creating cherished memories and were an inseparable couple who were rarely seen apart. Their unwavering love and affection were an inspiration to many.
Together, they had 4 children and he dedicated himself to providing them with the best life possible. Throughout their younger years, he coached soccer, but he was more than a coach. Bill made sure every kid had a ride and something to eat. He taught them the importance of hard work, dedication, respect, and generosity. His children look up to him as their role model, and his legacy lives on through them.
As William welcomed 8 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter, his devotion and affection extended to them. He enjoyed taking them fishing, telling stories, playing games, and teaching them life lessons. Even though he was no longer coaching, he was their number one fan. He showed up to every game and they would hear him yell from the sidelines on the field. His love for his grandchildren was immeasurable, and he would do anything in his power to ensure their happiness. His grandchildren adored him and looked forward to spending time with him.
William will be remembered as a kind, loving, and generous man who lived his life to the fullest. His love for family, giving to others, and fishing, will never be forgotten. He will be deeply missed by all, and his spirit, love, and dedication will live on in the countless memories he left behind.
He is survived by his wife: Patsy “Shorty”; 4 children: Michelle (David), Willy (Jen), Norman (Shannon), Timmy (Becky); 8 grandchildren: Brianna (Jesse), Justin, Logan, Olivia, Max, Jake, Mason, Bryce; 1 great-granddaughter: Alicia; and countless friends, in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
