Lowell R. Smith
November 21, 1933 — February 14, 2024.

Lowell was born in Minneapolis to parents of Swedish descent, Mary and Dick Smith.
He had an older brother Vincent (deceased) and a younger sister Lorraine.
He attended the University of Minnesota, earning a Bachelors degree and Ph.D. in organic chemistry.
In 1960 he married the love of his life, Gretchen Togersen.
The young couple moved to St.Louis for Lowell’s job at Monsanto Chemical Company, where he worked for 37 years, becoming a Senior Fellow and earning several patents. He did research in agricultural chemistry, developing the process for Roundup herbicide.
Lowell and his wife had 2 daughters, Lesley and Natalie.
When his girls were growing up, he was very active in Trinity Lutheran church in Kirkwood, including being the Sunday-School Superintendent.
He and his wife really liked traveling, going to several countries and to all 50 states.
He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed watching sports.
He appreciated art and created many beautiful rugs and abstract paintings, including one for the cover of his novel “Bad Chemistry.”
Ten and a half years ago he and his wife moved to Laclede Groves where they’ve made many wonderful new friends.
He helped set up the Laclede Groves library.
He organized and ran the Laclede Groves history discussion group.
A beloved brother, husband, father, uncle and friend, Lowell will be sorely missed.
