William Thomas Hancock
Hancock, William Thomas, 84, died on July 30. Son of Clara L. (Trammell) and Olin Craig Hancock, beloved husband of Barbara J. Hancock, father of James Hancock (Susan) and Cynthia Wakeland (T. Michel); grandfather of Kerry Sherer (Adam), David Hancock (Jennifer), John Hancock (Melanie), Peter Hancock, Sarah Wakeland, Mark Hancock; great grandfather of Russell Sherer, Henry Sherer, Caleb Sherer, Lydia Hancock. He attended Kennard Grade School and Southwest High School in St. Louis, received a B.A. Degree from Westminster College in Fulton, MO, a Bachelor of Divinity Degree and Doctor of Ministry from McCormick Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Chicago. He served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Aurora, Indiana, from 1954 to 1960, and pastor of Northminster Presbyterian Church, St. Louis, 1960-1994. He was a member and served as Moderator for the Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy. He was a leader in the movements for civil rights, women’s rights, and other marginalized people. He was a faithful servant to his church, congregation, and all people who have been touched by his strong leadership and faith in God; a moral and spiritual leader who had a positive and lasting impact upon the social fabric of the North St. Louis County region. He was a private pilot; a radio-controlled model airplane builder and pilot; a wood craftsman; a toy maker for his grandchildren; and loved boats, water skiing and jazz. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, August 22, at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church of Ferguson, 401 Darst Road, where, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made.
Rev Hancock had been on my mind the past couple days I was looking him up to tell him how much he meant to me. So sorry for your loss We will be married 49 years and I have contacted him even after he retired I had moved to Indiana in 74 and now in Florida. I’m so sad I never got to tell him My sympathies to you
