Carl Dennis Scharr
Carl Dennis Scharr at the age of 75, passed away at his home on Wednesday October 7, 2015 at 6:11 a.m. The cause of death was lung cancer. He was a smoker for 60 years. As his wife I would ask every smoker to please consider quitting now.
Funeral Services: will be held on Monday, October 19th at All Saints Catholic Church, 7 McMenamy Dr. St Peters Mo at time 11am. Carl’s family will be present at the church from 10am to greet family and friends before the funeral Mass.
In his youth Carl lived in many different places. His father was a career navy man so they moved around the country many times until he was in his teens. After that they settled in the St. Louis County area.
Carl Dennis was born on September 11, 1940 in St. Louis MO. He was married to his wife Pat for 54 years. They have three children: Carl Robert Scharr, Suzanne Carrie Moore, and Timothy Michael Scharr. Carl has one brother Michael Edward Scharr.
Carl gave his time by volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America for 15 years. He took Boy Scouts Wood Badge training and became District Commissioner of the St. Peters area for a number of years. The entire family spent time at the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. The Philmont Scout Ranch is a large, rugged mountainous ranch covering 140,177 acres of wilderness. He took scout troops there for hiking and backpacking in those mountains many summers and enjoyed it greatly. There were great stories about how the bears would enter their camp sites to try to get their food bags out of the trees.
He loved fishing and boating with family on the river and lakes in the area. He also loved sitting in his back yard and driving his red truck around the St. Louis area. You probably ran into him along the way somewhere.
He had a quick wit and loved to buy small novelty items. Three weeks ago he brought home a wooden back scratcher for me (his wife) and a Jack-in-the-Box foam head to put on my car aerial. An example of his wit: A few months ago I bought a new face cream which I was putting on one morning when he was standing behind me. I told him the directions said that my face was going to glow with this new cream. That night when we were going to bed he turned out the light and proceeded to shout “Oh my goodness I can’t sleep with your face glowing like that in the dark.” There is a story that happened while we were at the lake with family this past June which I can only tell to family. We have a tee-shirt that doesn’t quite explain what happened. These are some of the fun times we will all miss
He was the proud grandfather of five: Danielle Buerman, David Moore, Ben Woolfolk, Nathan and Jacob Scharr. He also enjoyed the two great grandchildren: Jordyn and Josie Buerman.
A special thank you for the care and medical help we received from SSM Hospice and Palliative Care representatives during his last days.
He will be greatly missed and was loved by his family and friends. We are thankful to God for the time we all shared with him.
A funeral luncheon will follow the mass and all are invited. Donations may be made to the All Saints Building fund in lieu of flowers.
Please share your condolences and your memories of Carl Dennis Scharr below and enjoy some of the photos of our life spent together over our 54 years.
I have so many great memories of Den. One Christmas we had a family party at our house. He and his family walk in with paper bags. He wouldn’t tell me what was in the bags. After we all opened our gag gifts he yells “ready fire”. They all opened their bags and bombarded us with toy guns shooting foam discs. We had so much fun and I’m sure that was his idea. After all these years I still find a disc or two. Den will be greatly missed by all.
So long my long time friend. Yes we will all miss you and all the joy you brought to us. I especialy remember being in the hospital at Scott AFB recovering from surgury and getting to see you every day you would drive all that way just to make me laugh. Rest in peace my friend and Gods speed.
Dennis you will be missed by Pat, your family and so many. So nice to know you.
Carl and I spent many years leading and instructing young Boy Scouts. I have so many great memories of our many adventures especially climbing The Tooth of Time mountain trail at Philmont Boy Scout ranch in New Mexico. Carl and his sons made our trip to Indy 500 more enjoyable with his humor and kindness. We have lived in different states for the past 20 years but had managed to stay in touch and shared many funny stories and emails. My friend will be greatly missed.
