Mark Cotton

Mark J. Cotton passed away peacefully the morning of May 11, 2020. Mark is survived by his mother, Yvette R. Gonthier Cotton of St. Charles, MO and his father, Steven R. Cotton of Alabama. He is also survived by his grandmother, Theresa Gonthier. Mark’s surviving siblings include a sister, Roberta, brother Chris, brother James and sister, Michelle. His Uncle Greg and Aunt Carla of Plymouth, MI, Uncle Art and Aunt Annmarie of St. Charles, MO. and Uncle Gerard and Aunt Tracey of O’Fallon, MO. Mark is also survived by his nephews, Ethan and Aeden, a niece Teagan and a great niece, Amelia. Other important persons in Marks life included “his” Mary Filbeck, Douglas Harder, and Christopher Kennerly as well as his housemate and staff from Living with Purpose.

Mark loved music, Disney movies, paperwork at his sister’s office and being with people. He participated in Special Olympics where he looked forward to the walker race and softball throw. Mark really enjoyed pushing buttons at “the boat”. He was often called Mr. “Golden Fingers”. Mark was always wanting to help everyone. In that capacity, Mark is an anatomical donor and so, not only has he blessed the lives of those of us that knew and loved him, he will be blessing the lives others

Some of Mark’s favorite things are: He loved to be called or call others different things: Hambone, David, Cowboy. He thought his Uncle Art was actually “Chow Baby”. One of Mark’s favorite things to do, was to watch the helicopter at St. John’s Mercy Hospital in Joplin, MO. They gave him his flight wings then and today he has received a beautiful new yet different permanent set of wings. Mark will be joining many of our family members in the Celestial Kingdom. I know he is now free of the limits his body had and is running through the fields, bowling with his grandfather (his bub) and enjoying the company of his “Lucky.”

Hey buddy, you will be missed by everyone and anyone who knew you. You made me laugh because you had names for everyone you loved, I was called friend. We had a bond and your roommates use to say that you were my favorite, and they were right, but that was our secret. You loved to be outside and you didn’t care where as long as you were outside. You use to tell me that you swam like a fish and you were definitely a favorite at the YMCA. Mark it was a pleasure to work with you and you will always hold a special place in my heart. You were an angel on earth and now you officially have your wings and I will be forever grateful to have had you as my friend.

My prayers are with Mark’s family at this most difficult time. Mark was a wonderful first room mate to William. I still think about their housewarming party. What a happy and monumental day for both young men. May God give you peace as only He can give.

Yvette – What a beautiful service. Everyone’s comments were so heartfelt and so beautiful. Both of the songs were very touching. I can tell there is so much love in your family. Mark knew he was so loved and Mark gave so much back to everyone. All of the pictures of Mark from birth to present are very telling of the loving family he grew up in. What a beautiful day on the lake. Yvette – you cared for and loved Mark in every aspect, as mothers do, but you were exceptional. I have always said you have a very caring heart. Thank you for letting me be a part of today. Keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

I was privileged to be Mark’s caretaker for about a year. He was always happy. He never complained. Despite his every day challenges, he was more grateful than anyone I’ve met. I appreciate the memories we have of reading the Bible and praying together, as that brought him peace and joy. He was truly loved by many and loved all that he met. He was one of a kind, truly, and I will see him in heaven one day! Say hello to Jesus for me, Mark, we will see you there some day.
