Alice Meier

Alice Pearl (Wilhelm) Meier (87) was the oldest daughter of Frank and Helen (nee Erkens) Wilhelm.  She and her brother Frank (deceased) grew up in St. Louis, Missouri.  She died Tuesday, June 15, 2010, surrounded by her children and all of her grandchildren, in her home.  Alice was the beloved wife of Milton “Mickey” L. Meier since November 18th, 1944.  She was the cherished and devoted mother of Stephen P. Meier (deceased), Linda K. (Bill) Wing and Jan A. (Johnny) Xeno; adored grandmother “Gram” to Kathleen Meier, Sean M. Quinn, Jennifer L. (James) Cox, Megan E. (Geoff) Sindel, Joli L (Jeff) Podolsky, Ryan P. (Sara) Quinn and Livia J. (Greg) Hirsch; dearest great-grandmother “Gram-Gram” of Mariah Rose Sindel, Jacob Michael Caldwell, Michael Stephen Podolsky, Aubrey Lily Sindel, Lara Elle Podolsky, and Joshua Quinn Sindel.

Alice was a beautiful woman, physically and in spirit.  She was loving and kind to everyone, and she achieved her greatest wish to have a close and loving family. Throughout her life, Alice was known for her love for her children and family.  Family was everything to Alice and those ideals guide us all now as we raise our own children.

While working for the Mayrose Meat Company, she met the very charismatic Milton “Mickey” Meier in June 1944 who was so charmed by Alice that he proposed two weeks later. Alice and Mickey lived lives of love and appreciation for each other, God’s earth, and all of us. Mickey and Alice taught us all to live a life where understanding each other was more important than being right.  Alice loved all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren so well.  She had great empathy for everyone, and all her family, even when we weren’t always that easy to love.  Alice worked as a comptometer operator (mathematical machine) in the 40’s and 50’s and for the Federal Milk Market Administrator’s office from the mid 1960’s to 1974.  She was so bright that she taught the new college age young men how to operate the early computers.

Alice and Mickey lived in many places including Miami, Florida, Mission Viejo, California, and Houston. Texas.  They returned to St. Louis after the death of their son, Stephen.  They traveled to all parts of the country, enjoying the abundance and beauty of America.

Alice was a supreme cook and baker, making all entrees, cakes, cookies, brownies, and sauces from scratch.  She made everyone’s favorite dishes at Sunday dinners or birthdays, and holidays. Additionally, Alice was an exquisite seamstress.  From children’s clothes to prom dresses to upholstery to Halloween costumes to doll clothes, no request was turned down and every detail was perfected.  She would adjust a child/grandchild’s dress to 1/8th of an inch if that child wanted.

She was great at bridge, crossword puzzles and regular puzzles.  Anything we asked of her she would try to do, like being at the home birth of one of her grandchildren and helping care for a great-grandchild right after our father’s death.  She cherished her beloved “Mickey” and with the help of hospice attended to him as he prepared to leave for heaven for a month, in their home in 2001.  She took such great pleasure in talking about all the wonderful qualities of each of us. She was so proud of us all and told us so, regularly.  She always said, “The least you can be is kind.”  Knowing her great-grandchildren personally, and having a special relationship with each of them gave her great pleasure.  They so reflected her love.  At the end of her life she loved a little dog, Willie, and a dear friend and caregiver, Terri Thomas.  She stayed connected with life long friends as well as made new ones of everyone around her.

We will deeply miss our Best Mom, Gram, Gram-Gram and friend.  A celebration of Alice’s life will be held on Sunday, June 27th, from 2pm to 4pm at The Relationship Center of St. Louis. The address is 937 Gardenview Office Parkway, Creve Coeur, Missouri 63141. (Near Lindbergh and Olive) The phone number is 314-983-0070 ext. 1.  Email address: lwingpairs@yahoo.com.

My mother-in-law, Alice Meier, was a very kind and sweet soul who accepted and welcomed me to the family almost 20 years ago after marrying her oldest daughter, Linda. Alice has been a blessing in my life and I already miss her greatly. Linda and I want to thank all of our family and friends from all over the world for their loving thoughts and prayers for Alice and her loved ones. Thank you all.

Alice has been a neighbor of mine at Parkside Condos for the past several years. I enjoyed talking with Alice when she was walking her dog, Willie. She always complimented the flowers I planted in front of our building. And, she spoke fondly of her family. In the winter months, I would sometimes pick up her mail for her, and clean snow off her car. In return, she would leave little presents for me in my flower pots. She was a beautiful, kind and warm lady. My condolences to her family.
