David Kennell
Longtime resident of University City, Missouri, David Epperson Kennell passed away on April 20, 2011. He was born in Syracuse, New York on May 23, 1932.
While an undergraduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, David was on the Berkeley Swim Team. He continued his studies at this same university and earned his Ph.D. in Biophysics in 1959.
After earning his Ph.D., he completed post-doctoral work, specializing in messenger RNA, from Harvard-MIT Medical School.
His professional career in scientific research and teaching started in 1961 at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He retired in 1997, and in 1998 he became Professor Emeritus, Department of Molecular Microbiology.
He and many other co-workers shared the drive to do basic microbial molecular biology and a concern for society, social injustice, and the enviornment.

1969 Washington University School of Medicine Oral History Project provided an audio interview recounting the participation of the St. Louis Doctors for Peace in the nationwide Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam held on October 15, 1969 at the WUSM.

David was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Ruth Epperson Kennell of Palo Alto, California and brother James Kennell of Seattle, Washington. He is survived by his wife Wilma Tanner Kennell, sons Charles Evan Kennell, Fred Tanner Kennell, and daughter Laura Suzanne Kennell.
He was a kind and gentle person who was an avid swimmer, bicyclist, and hiker. He is deeply missed by his loved ones.

While a student at Washington University, Dr. Kennell hired me as a part time laboratory assistant in his labs. I learned so much from him. He was a great teacher and researcher.
