Joseph C. Edwards, 93, passed away at 4:32pm, Monday, June 27, 2011 at
home. He was born on December 12, 1917 in Wesco, MO to Jesse and
Bertha Edwards. On April 19, 1941, he married Anne C. Stimac in Wood
River, IL. Surviving along with his wife is a son Mark, and,
granddaughters Allison and Sarah Edwards all of Alton, a sister-in-law
Mary Stimac of St. Louis, MO along with various nieces, nephews and
cousins. Preceding him in death besides his parents, were a sister
Fern, a cousin Andy Soffray, and other inlaws, aunts and uncles. He
served in World War II in the Army with the Third Armored Division in
the European theatre, was a former POW and was honorably discharged in
Battle Creek, MI in 1945. He returned to Alton and continued working
for The Coca Cola Company until retiring in 1975. He and Anne also
owned Milton Package Liquor in Alton until retiring from there in
1983. He was a member of the Eagles #254, and a lifelong member of VFW
Post 1308 and the DAV. There will be no visitation. St. Louis
Cremation is in charge of arrangements. A memorial mass will be
celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton on Saturday, July
9th at 10a.m. with Father Nnamdi as celebrant. Burial will follow at
St Joseph’s Cemetery in Alton, with the VFW conducting full military
rites. Memorials may be made in his name to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
