Charles F. Stieger passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 14, 2022, at the age of 96. Beloved son of the late Charles and Agatha (Blattler) Stieger; dearest brother and brother-in-law of the late Edwin A. and Ellie (Turner) Stieger and Martha and Paul Strifler; beloved uncle of Michael Stieger, Kenneth Strifler, Chris Ozols, Lynn Obacz, and Joan Tod; wonderful cousin to many Swiss relatives; admired math teacher by the faculty and students at Lynbrook HS, NY.

Charles was the greatest humorist and will be loved and missed by all.

A beautiful photo tribute. My father and Charlie were friends since they worked at Lynbrook High school. They enjoyed canoeing together over the years and after retirement met once a month at the diner with other retirees for 30 years. I had the honor of joining them twice. What a great, honorable group of men. I will always have fond memories of Charlie’s humor and smile. I’m thankful for the friendship he and my father shared. I hope they are having a good laugh together right now!

We always looked forward to Mondays because we knew Charlie , our dedicated volunteer , would be there. Not only did he help put a smile on the faces of our patients , but he kept us all entertained with his fun and quirky sense of humor. We are eternally grateful for the help he provided. Sending prayers for strength and comfort for his family , especially Martha , who keep us up to date on his post Mercy years . With love and sympathy ,

I was friends with Charlie at the Long Island Harmonica Club.
He was wonderful man, … and a darn good harmonica player!

Oh I’m so sorry to hear about Charley’s passing. He loved the Long Island harmonica club and all members enjoyed his unique style of playing. Over the years he helped teach new players his technique, he also brought in tablatures written in hand and Charlie had the best handwriting I ever seen! it almost looked as if it was computer generated! We were all sad when he moved to St. Louis but Charley left a long lasting impression on the members of our club and I hope he is now at peace.

Aunt Martha, Mike and I are so very sorry for your loss. It is hard losing a sibling, regardless their age. You must be thankful that you got to spend time together the afternoon before he passed. The collage of photos are wonderful! So many happy memories. Mike remembers laughing at your wedding reception when Charlie stated that you married Mr. Wonderful who changes a lightbulb the same day that it burns out!! Reading all of the comments from people who knew Charlie, he sounded like a fantastic person that many were fortunate to have known. Sending our love, Mike and Joyce

I miss my brother so much. He is loved and remembered by all. Charlie dropped out of the brothers when my dad passed away to take care of my mom and myself. And these past 5 years it was my turn to take care of him and I loved the time with him. He had a great sense of humor and was sharp as a tack to the very end. My brother is truly a legend!

Mr Steiger was my favorite teacher, his sense of humor made learning Geometry fun. I stayed in touch with him for a few years after high school, truly one of a kind !

I am just seeing this and am so sad. Charlie was a good friend of my father as they were in the Brothers, together. I was a Math major in college and college professor and we used to banter about Math.

A great man who has a place in my heart, forever.

Charlie crossed my mind today as I thought about the people who lived in Maplewood when we moved in way back in 1984. Googling his name brought me here. Charlie was very kind, very funny… and how he loved his garden of tulips and daffodils! Our old neighbors have slowly moved away, like Charlie, and new people live near us now. We were very lucky to have Charlie as a neighbor. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Steiger (because that’s what we students called him) was a ramrod straight, serious teacher. He was also a good and kind man. We honored him by dedicating our yearbook to him. We were all so excited when he made sure he attended our 50th high school reunion, the only teacher who did so. A very special man…who will be missed. Jerry Tuckman LHS Class of ‘63

I learned just recently that he passed away in July 2022. I had him for 8 th grade math and geometry as a sophomore as many of us did in the LHS class of 1963. He was a very good teacher and much liked and admired by my classmates. I remember the dread I felt whenever I walked into his class and I saw
W I O on the board. It was fun to see him at our 50th reunion in Lynbrook. He was lucky to have made it to 96.

He was my favorite–such a good teacher, kind and fun to be with–his smile said it all. He made you feel like he cared. You didn’t want to disappoint him. He had to know how beloved he was and I am glad he enjoyed 96 years.

Math was never my strongest subject but it was made more than tolerable with his humor and patience! He was truly a very special man with a very special gift. As a result he was loved and respected by his students and he will be missed.

I am a 1963 Lynbrook High School graduate and remember Mr. Steiger well! He was surely one of my favorite teachers. He was really funny and made Math( not my forte) an enjoyable subject. So happy he had a long life! He will be missed!! As I thought about him over the years he always brought a smile to my face!

Teachers can change the world by inspiring a student. Mr. Stieger was such a teacher. As a member of Lynbrook High School Class of ’63, he actually made me appreciate math, a dreaded subject. I was furious one year when I was assigned a different teacher. After high school, I was fortunate enough to have additional class opportunities with Mr. Stieger when he taught philosophy. Proficient in many subjects, hobbies and community activities, he had a long life where he touched many lives ~ a blessing for all of us who gained from this man of wisdom, grace and humor.

I was NOT a math student! But Mr Steiger got me through it. Great sense of humor.

Hi – I am Martha Strifler – Charlie’s baby sister. I come to this site every now and then – I was thrilled to see all the wonderful comments by his students – I know how much he loved teaching all of you – after Charlie passed away I heard that many LHS students posted comments on a special LHS graduate site online – but I could never get onto it – so I really appreciated your comments placed here on his obituary – Thank you so much!
