I remember working closely with Dave as he was Dean of Students and Assistant Principal. He was truly dedicated to the work of organizing, disciplining, and seeing that difficult, time-consuming tasks were accomplished with speed and efficiency. He had a resounding, hearty laugh – and more importantly, a big heart for staff. May your family be consoled that he lived a full life imbued with DeSmet’s’ motto: A MAN FOR OTHERS.

Dave was always cordial and friendly to me whenever I attended social functions at DeSmet. He was a true, hard worker for young men in the Jesuit Tradition.

I was a student (class of 82) at the time Mr Doughty was at DeSmet, and I am sorry to hear this news of his passing. Please accept my condolences and know that I will pray for Mr. Doughty and his family at this time. Its funny I still have to call him Mr Doughty instead of David after all these years. He will always be Mr. Doughty to me. Respectfully Jim Concannon (’82).

I was “JUG King” my freshman year, and on disciplinary probation for most of my time at De Smet. Mr. Doughty helped me through a troubled time, with heavy doses of discipline followed by forgiveness.. He made it clear to me that I was not a bad kid, but that I made poor choices. Without his help and advocacy, I would not have graduated, or grown into the loving child of God that I eventually became. I owe this man, personally, and have tried to live up to his example. Before he retired, when I was teaching, I visited him several times to let him know, and I am glad I did. He was too humble to accept any credit for the fundamental work he did with me. He leaves huge shoes and the world is less with his passing. My condolences to his family and friends.
    Paul Riat, Class of 1984

To the Doughty Family, I am sorry for your loss. We always have the good memories and times that we had with him. Back in the 1990’s, I had the pleasure of working with him. I oversaw the registration process for the DeSmet students taking college credit courses through Saint Louis University. He was always very helpful and got back to me in a timely manner. He will be missed.
