Doris Campbell

Doris Virginia Campbell, age 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. She was born December 15, 1933 in Louisville, KY to Marjory (Gratz) and John D. Griffin. Preceding her in death was her beloved husband, Adam, siblings Jack, Louise, Zorado, Hack, Sidney, Jim, Rozetta, Hattie and Marjory.

She married Adam Campbell after meeting him while working as a waitress at Walgreens in Louisville where he was a grill cook. Doris and Adam moved to Chicago where she worked at several restaurants, most notably, Johnny’s Steakhouse and Broker’s Inn in downtown Chicago where Adam was manager. While she would often say “I don’t do people”, she loved and doted on her regular customers, who affectionately called her Grandma after the birth of her first grandchild. She retired from Cere’s Café in 2003.

Doris lived life for her children. “I have the best children in the world” she would often say. She referred to her children and their spouses lovingly as “The In-Laws and The Outlaws”. Once you were in, you were always family. She loved family gatherings, especially on Christmas when she always went overboard piling gifts higher than the Christmas tree. It was common to hear her (jokingly) yell at someone that she was going to “give you the slipper” when they acted up and to make you pay the cuss bank if you slipped up with a bad word. She had a song to fit every situation, and if there wasn’t one, she would make one up. She was an avid reader who survived on black coffee, cigarettes, saltine crackers and, only occasionally, some real food.

Doris is survived by her five children, Adam Campbell Jr. (Jacqueline), Rosetta Marie Johnston (the late Roger Hawkins), Kenneth Paul Campbell Sr. (Debbie), James Henry Campbell (Sandy) and Virginia Lynn Nottelmann (Michael). She remained beloved by Dennis Johnston and Libby Campbell. She was the proud grandmother of Christina, Scott, Adam III, Erin, Eric, Kenneth II, Vera, Kellianne, Jennilynn, and Thomas and was great grandmother to Jack, Maddie, Finn, Lotus, Maren, Adam IV, Linden, Opal, Megan, Nicholas, Abigail, Max, and Ethan.
