Doris Coons
Our great-grandmother, grandmother and mother, Doris Coons, passed away in the early morning of January 4th. It has taken us awhile to be able to put into words, our loss of this wonderfully humorous and elegant lady.
Born on June 20, 1925, Doris had seen so much in her 93 ½ years. She graduated early from high school and then attended college where she studied Graphic Arts. In 1951 she met Herbert Coons, whom she married after 3 weeks of dating. They loved one another unconditionally, running Business Insurance Consultant and the Herbert L. Coons Agency, Inc. for 50 years. Doris was amazed by airplanes and airplane travel, she learned how to fly small airplanes herself, travelling between Chicago and Park Rapids, Minnesota. After much success in business, she and Bert would travel to Switzerland each year for hiking and mountain climbing. Doris supported Bert in his adventures of building race cars and his art endeavors. In 2004, they left their home of 42 years in Elmwood Park, Illinois for St. Louis, Missouri, settling in the West County suburb of Ballwin. They were married for 63 years until Bert passed away in 2014 succumbing to the effects of Alzheimer’s.
It was in the last two years that Doris was diagnosed with cancer of the lung, with metastasis into the liver and bone. After treatment with chemo, her body could no longer thrive. Doris often stated she was ready to go to heaven as she had no regrets. She had had a great life with many blessings. She chose to be supported by hospice care at Evelyn’s House Hospice Center for her last two days.
Doris did not want to have a celebration of her life in any form. To the best of our ability we want to honor those wishes. In order to honor her and help us with own feelings of closure, we have decided to have a small gathering with her family to bury her ashes with her loving husband, Bert.
In loving memory, her family: Dave Coons, son, Jane Coons, daughter-in-law, Doug Coons, son, Donna Coons, daughter-in-law, Kate Smith, granddaughter, and her husband, Kolin Smith, Trevor Coons, grandson, and his wife, Haley Coons, Dylin Coons, granddaughter, Dana Coons, granddaughter, and her great-grandchildren; Tripp Coons, Nora Coons, Kaylin Smith and Keiran Smith.
Dave, Jane and family – please accept my condolences. May your mother’s memory be a blessing to those who knew and loved her
