Eugene Zimmerman

Eugene (Gene) Clarence Zimmerman passed away at the age of 83 on February 17, 2013, at home, surrounded by his loved ones. He was the loving husband of Janet (nee Wilson) Zimmerman . Cherished father of Gary Zimmerman, Gaye Zimmerman, Tamra (Dan) Dalton, Bret Zimmerman, Steve (Sandie) Lovelace, and Shannon (Dannielle) Zimmerman. Beloved brother of Delores Jeffery, Marvin (Bud) Zimmerman, and Richard Zimmerman. Loving Grandfather of Nathan Glass, Nick Glass, Adrienne Zimmerman, Amy Sobinski, Mark Lovelace, Kelly Glass, Scott Lovelace, Sabrina Zimmerman, Bobby Totra, Drew Totra, Blake Zimmerman and Chase Zimmerman. Great Grandfather of Kaylee, Kylie, Karli, Khloe, Taylor, Brenna, Kylie and Lanie. Dear Uncle and caring friend to all that knew him. Gene is preceded in death by his parents James Marvin Zimmerman and Edna Ruby (nee Davis) Zimmerman.

Gene graduated from Ritenour High School in 1948 and attended St. Louis University and Washington University. He served his country during the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Army. Gene was a decorated Intermediate Radio Operator of the Heavy Mortar Division assigned to the 38th Regiment of the 2nd Infantry Division. Gene and his family are very proud of his valiant and outstanding accomplishments during his time in the army and his participation in several key battles.

He was a successful entrepreneur and businessman: EZ Paving, DOES Delivery, St. Charles Security, E. Zimmerman and Associates. Gene also continued his commitment to his community by serving as the elected Assessor of St. Charles County for 22 years.

Gene started his career in county government by being appointed St. Charles County Assessor by Governor Christopher Bond on March 18th 1981. He was elected to serve multiple times during his 22 years as County Assessor. During his tenure Gene demonstrated his passion for a fair and equitable tax base. His determination drove many standards to establish technological advancements in assessment administration, digital mapping, and clear guidance in the structure of a charter form of government. Gene’s dedication and colorful exuberance yielded many successful court cases that sculpted today’s assessment environment, his straight-line approach resolved many untenable situations providing the footprints used in many offices today. Gene was active and respected in both local and national Assessor Organizations.

A military funeral honors ceremony was held for Gene at Jefferson Barracks on Tuesday, February 19, 2013. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Stella’s Wish (stellaswish.org) or BJC Hospice.

He was a remarkable man and will be missed by all.

    Very sorry for your loss. I will always have great and fond memories of Gene, and the zest in which he brought to everything he did. His love for sports was a very big part of my youth.

    Just was checking names in the old neighborhood and found Gene’s information. So sorry to hear the sad news. Gene was a great man and good next door neighbor from 1974-1985 when we moved to Mesa, AZ with MDHC. Nicki died in 1993 at age 45 also from cancer. Mike married Laura Boyd in Dec 2013. I retired from MDHC. Again thanks for being great neighbors.
