George Clyde Burris

George Clyde Burris passed away peacefully at Friendship Village Chesterfield in Hospice Care, on Sunday, May 19, 2024 at the age of 84.

He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle; a man who was wise, insightful, steadfast, quiet, strong, kind, loyal, gracious, humble, and caring.  He was a man who lived his faith and was a friend to all.  He enjoyed life by playing tennis, golf, duck hunting and fishing on Bull Shoals Lake, attending St Louis Cardinals baseball and football games, camping and traveling.

George loved life and when around others he had a dry sense of humor exhibited with a wry smile and/or a twinkle in his eye. He rose to challenges within the family, at work and with Parkinson Disease with a quiet strength and dignity.

He is preceded in death by parents Maxine Burris (‘49), Clyde and Ellen Burris and a brother, Stephen Burris.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Patricia Hays Burris; his children: George Phillip Burris and Pamela S Peters; his grandchildren: George Raymond (Krista) Peters and Jeffrey Peters; brother- and sister-in-law: Larry and Bette Hays; nieces and nephews: Chris (Sandy) Burris, Sarah Burris (Michael Meyer), Sean Burris (Jessica Diebold), Belinda (Nick) Paterno and six great nieces and nephews.

George graduated from Missouri Valley College in 1962, worked as manager for John R Thompson Restaurant Company from 1962-69 in Milwaukie, Chicago, Fort Wayne and St. Louis. He began his career at Washington University as Director of Food Service in 1970 and after holding many titles he retired as Director of Auxiliary Services in 2003 after 33 years.  He was active in the Central and National Associations of Auxiliary Services and served as President of the National Association before he retired.  Through the years he was active in his churches, most notably Hamilton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he was an elder, chair, and vice chair of the congregation and served as Area Moderator and on regional councils.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at Dayspring Baptist Church, 1001 Municipal Center Drive, Town & Country, MO.  Burial will be May 30, 2024 in Barry, Illinois.

    Pat and family,

I loved George’s sense of humor and miss his smile and that twinkle in his eye. He had a spirit of calm strength that I admired, which mirrored his faith. The obituary captured him so well. He was a great friend to me and I can only imagine the sorrow you feel. Lean on each other, your friends, and the knowledge that the Holy Spirit is within and on all sides of you to comfort and guide you.

    Dan

Please know, Pat, that I’m thinking of you and Pam and Phillip, with love and sympathy. Through our 60 years of friendship I’ve admired George’s strength of character. Our family visits, Bridge playing, dinner parties and church involvement are special memories now.

Pat, words cannot explain, my and Joy’s feelings of gratitude for having had George blessed in teaching us that game called bridge with his humor, skills at playing bridge, patience with teaching us the game as well as being a solid friend! Our prayers go up for you and your children as you navigate life without the special person he was to all of us!

    God be with you!

Pat, My mom (Mary Parrish) and I enjoyed a lovely lunch with you and George about 6 months ago. We are thankful we got to spend time together sharing past memories of church, bridge club and Naples to name a few. Praying for Gods strength and comfort for you and your family during this time of loss.
