James David “Dave” Farmer Jr.

MARCH 1, 1936 – FEBRUARY 18, 2022

Dave was survived by his wife of 66 years, Barb. Their children; Connie (Jerry) Nasalroad, Michael Farmer (Phyllis Fernadez), Phil (Darla) Farmer Sr., and Pam (Joe) Hertling; Grandchildren: Matt Farmer (Frankie Accardi), Joy Nasalroad, Phil Farmer Jr., Courtney (Bryan) Brautigam, Rachel Nasalroad, Caitlin Hertling and Jaime Moore; Great-grandchildren: Jewel Holmes (Joy), McKenna and Jameson Farmer (Matt and Frankie).

He was preceded in death by his parents, James David Farmer Sr. and Lillian Farmer.

Dave was an only child, born March 1, 1936. He lived at 9th and Destrehan St., St. Louis, MO, all of his young life until his June 25, 1955 marriage to Barbara Bender. He attended Central High School, where he met Barb and they graduated together in June 1955. He enlisted in the Army Reserve in his Junior year and was a member for 2 years.

Dave grew up with his cousins, who were more like his siblings. He also, had friends from grade school and high school that were his lifelong friends. He played cards with his cousins every month. He loved family reunions and getting together with his friends every chance he could.

Dave was a Boy Scout leader, when his children were young. He attended his children and grandchildren’s school, scouts and sports activities. You couldn’t keep him away. Dave and Barb even traveled to Europe to be with Joy, while she played with her high school orchestra in 7 countries. He enjoyed attending baseball and wrestling matches with his sons and son-in-law.

Dave retired from Sverdrup & Parcel, after 19 years.

Dave had a stroke in January 2015. He was cared for at home by his children and grandchildren for 4 years. Afterwards, he lived in a care facility. He was known for his memory, even after his stroke, of family, St. Louis and church history and all about the people he met. He kept his friendliness and sense of humor. Dave never met a stranger and made connections wherever he went. One of his favorite things to ask was, “Where did you go to high school?”

Dave’s heart was always with his church, Memorial Blvd. Christian Church, which he was a member his entire life. He was a Deacon, Elder, Choir, Berean Class and Board member. He volunteered as Santa, when his children were young. He volunteered in the church Food Bank, Berean Class BBQ’s and Annual Hike for Hunger. He enjoyed playing trivia and fellowship dinners.

Dave was loved by many and will greatly missed.

We enjoyed our visits with him over the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. May you find peace in knowing that he is at rest and you did your best, when he needed your help.

Dave complained to me that he and Barb were the youngest members of the Berean class until I came along. I enjoyed working with him in the food pantry. Dave looked forward to praying at the communion table. He has been missed since his illness and will be missed even more now.
