Martha “Marty” Mahon

Martha Frances Mahon (Marty) was born on July 17, 1933 in Evansville, Indiana. In 1951, she moved to St. Louis to attend Washington University. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in 1956, and in 1988 she completed the Master’s program in Fine Arts at the University of Georgia, Athens. Marty was an artist all her life and produced a significant body of work in sculpture, painting, and design. She was inspired by a multitude of religions and spiritual paths, by her Irish ancestry, and by the protest movements of her lifetime, especially against war and environmental destruction.
Marty was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister. She is survived by her sons, Alex and Max Mutrux, her daughter-in-laws, Carol Crudden and Jill Wagenknecht, and her grandchildren, M L and Alice. She is also survived by her siblings, Rosemary, Betty, and Scott.

Martha was a force! Because of my job in the St. Louis art world, I was fortunate enough to know her and exhibit her artwork. Having met her probably 25 years ago, I found her to be a strong woman with fierce opinions, a big heart, and great artistic talent. I will miss chatting with her. May her memory be a blessing to all who loved and knew her.
