Michael “Mick” McCarthy

McCarthy, Michael Joseph III, “Mick” age 73, passed away peacefully at his childhood home with family on Tuesday, December 6, 2022.

Mick was born on November 18, 1949, to the late Michael Joseph McCarthy Jr. and Joan Marie McCarthy nee (Watts). Eldest son of seven survived by Christine (Geoffrey) Powers, Laura (Bob) Dick, Dana (Charlie) Jones, Kenneth (Dawn) McCarthy, Marianne (Rick) LaMartina, and Kevin McCarthy. Nephew of William Watts and Gloria Hennecke. He was a beloved uncle, cousin, and dear friend to many.

He attended and graduated from Riverview Gardens High School in 1968. Following graduation, he enlisted and served proudly in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After an honorable discharge, he finished his studies and earned his bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1975 from the University of Missouri-Rolla. After graduation, he began as an engineer at the Magma Copper Company in Tucson, Arizona. Mick loved to explore the great outdoors. He was a proficient hiker and skier, and even earned his pilot’s license. Bilingual in Spanish, he moved to Mexico City where he attended Universidad de las Americas. Upon return to the US, he earned his Master of Business Administration degree from Arizona State University in 1979. From there, Mick moved to Topeka, Kansas to work for BNSF as a metallurgist. His academic pursuits did not end there, however. In the late eighties, Mick moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas for law school, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Arkansas’ School of Law.

Mick was always a leader, the first in his family to graduate from college. He was compassionate and kind, which was shown by his adoration for children and dogs. He will be remembered for his intelligence and sense of humor. Always a big smile and the best laugh. Mick loved his family and friends, and they loved him. He never forgot a birthday or anniversary. He will be missed dearly.

Mick was one of my best friends. His sense of humor, intelligence and his generosity was infectious and he made friends easily with his love of people and life. My family became his family and we regarded him as part of it. Mick will never leave our hearts and look forward to seeing him again in heaven of course with Buck by his side. The Meier Family

Thinking of you today Mickey and remembering all the good times. Thankful for all the trips you took me on. You were always a great brother and taught me a lot. Always willing to help whenever I asked, you gave me my first down payment on my first car! Love you and miss you, I know you are now with all the greats in heaven. Merry Christmas.

I just found out from my sister Tami today of Mike’s passing. I met him in my Freshman year at Riverview Gardens where we were good friends in HS and fraternity brothers in college. We even rolled over several times in a VW bug together after a fraternity party in June 1970. We both graduated from U Mo-Rolla in May of ‘75 with a BS Metallical Engineering and accepted positions at Magma in the Tucson area. We lost touch with each other after Magma. We shared tons of great memories during those years. I share his loss with all of his friends and family.

Today we put to rest, my brother Mick. He was a kind soul. Just a good guy. He walked me, and talked me through some of the most difficult times of my life. I will miss him terribly but I know I will see him again in heaven. My love for Mick will never die.
