Robert James Spargo

Robert James Spargo (November 19, 1937 – April 20, 2023) was born to Melvin and Gwendolyn (Clark) Spargo in Springfield, Illinois.  Known as Bob, he was the oldest of three brothers, Ronald (Ruth), and Roger.  Raised on a farm, his work ethic and willingness to help developed at an early age.

Bob met his wife, Marilyn (Terpening), at a church event, and they were married just a few months later; a marriage that lasted for 54 years, when Marilyn died on April 11, 2012.  Together they had three daughters, Nancy Spargo (Melinda), Ellen Grasch (Gary), and Susan, who died shortly after birth.

Bob was industrious and skilled.  Whether it was a fix, or new construction, he had the tools and the knowledge.  He also loved people, and this served him well when he and Marilyn purchased R & M Appliances in Jacksonville, Illinois in 1975.  Bob was a leader at First Presbyterian Church, a Jaycee, a Girl Scout, and a member of the Chamber.  He was a family centered man, a mentor, and a servant.

After moving to St. Louis, MO in 2012, Bob continued to serve at the American Legion and Nurses for Newborns.  He was active and well-loved at South County Senior Center, Serenity Day Center, Eliot Unitarian Chapel, and for the last year, Cape Albeon Assisted Living.

Bob’s life was a humble one, yet rich in family and friends.  He was a proud father, and absolutely delighted in his grandchildren and great grandchildren: David (Emily) Grasch, Jackson, and Hudson, Katie Grasch, Wesley and Nora, Kevin (Sammi) Grasch and Lincoln, Ashley (Michael) St. Clair, Stephen (Celeste) Spargo and Finley, Brian and Aaron Stieglitz. He was frequently the favorite uncle or cousin to many.

He showed up for life until the end, handled the constraints that developed from his declining health with grace, and remained the lovable, kind, gentle and witty man he was.

Bob was such a good man, a friend to all, and a positive role model. My sympathy and prayers go out to his two wonderful daughters, Nancy and Ellen.

Bob was always with a smile and a gentleness that was second to none. He probably never knew that he was a gift to me after my own father passed away, he reminded me so much of my dad and brought such peace for me during those first few months/years. I will forever remember him.

Peace and Love to all who knew, loved and treasured BOB
