Roy E. Avery
Roy E. Avery passed away suddenly on the evening of September 25th, 2023 at the age of 66.
Roy was an electrical engineer and started his own business in 1990. He enjoyed woodworking, crafting heirloom furniture, Boy Scouts, Adult Leader Training, camping, cooking (and eating), and loud rock music. He was, in his own words, “passionate” in his conversations and enjoyed teaching others about math and numbers. Recently, he enjoyed sitting on his back patio and watching wildlife. He will be deeply missed.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 40 years, Patricia “Pat”; his six children Peter (Michaela), Michael (Manuela), James (Brooke), Elizabeth (AJ) AngaJala, Margaret (fiance Nick Pifer), and Timothy; and his grandchildren Lucy, Adam, Herman, Paul, Walter, Annabelle, Samuel, Marigold, Eleanor, and Adeline. He is survived by his siblings Pat (Lou) Pillot, Mike Zupan (brother-in-law), Art (Louise) Avery, Steve (Mary) Avery, Marc Avery, and Meg (Mark) Devers. He will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, endless relatives, and dear friends.
He is preceded in death by his father Roy and mother Margaret “Betty” Avery, his mother- and father-in-law Herman and Elizabeth Honigfort, and his sister Carol Zupan.
Services will be held on Friday, October 6th at St. Anselm Parish Church, 530 S Mason Rd, St. Louis, MO 63141.
Visitation is at 10AM with a Memorial Mass to follow at 11AM.
Beautiful tribute to a one of a kind man. Dear Pat, Peter, Michael, Elizabeth, James, Margaret, Tim – my heart goes out to you all for a husband / dad / grandpa gone too soon. I can imagine Roy’s booming voice and laugh, saying “hey you guys, this heaven’s a pretty cool place.” Please know that I am lifting all in prayer.
Dear Pat and family,
Heaven has gained a really amazing man. He’s looking down on all of you with a heart full of pride and love. The Ascension Boy Scouts (now grown men) were very lucky to have had his guidance all those years ago.
Sending thoughts and prayers for comfort in the coming days.
Dear Pat and all:
We pray for you and your family. We will greatly miss Roy and his many strengths. His activities in the neighborhood and his many conversations over the last 30+ years made life on the court interesting and lively. May he rest in peace!
Bob and I believe he must have been a wonderful person. So sad we never got to meet him. I think we will probably see him through his kids and family. I am sure he rubbed off on you all. Sorry we will not be there on the 6th, but our prayers will be with you all. His pictures on this site show how loving he must have been!
Heartfelt condolences and prayers to a wonderful family. Roy’s daughters babysat for us and he was always the kindest man when we’d see him in the neighborhood. His amazing children are a testament to the commitment he had to his faith and family.
Roy – the Voice- was a fixture on the New Horizons BSA Quartermaster Crew. By his booming laugh, we always knew where Roy was working. Roy may have been a ‘Double E’, but he sure knew a whole lot about mechanical engineering side of Corvette’s via his own father’s work on the first Vette’s with GM. It was an honor to sit around the cool night ALT campfire and listen to Roy’s stories-we just had to remind Roy to ‘hold-it-down’ as we were trying to get the ‘kids’ asleep. Roy has ‘Gone-Home’ as we say in Scouting. God’s Grace and Comfort to the entire Roy Avery Family./t
Roy Avery was our Troop Guide in the AquaNuts Patrol (Glub! Glub! Glub!) when I and my Patrol mates attended Adult Leader Training as new Leaders around 1998. Despite the volume of his vocalizations, his edgy wit, and his large presence, he was a gentle soul and guide. Roy allowed us to be ourselves, to find our path if you will, but also asked, in true Scouter fashion, “What about this?” Inevitably, with his guidance, we found the right answer or solution without even knowing we’d been guided. They were our answers, but not our answers. That little memory describes Roy’s character and power as a leader quite well, I think – loud for sure, and large, a presence in the room, tempered by kindness, good will, and a bottomless depth of skill in Scoutcraft.
Roy was a Mentor and teacher to me throughout my later career as a member of the Adult Leader Training Staff, and changed me in ways that extend to my business and life outside Scouting. I cherish my memories of Roy and know losing Roy is a loss for the many who knew him, and also for those who will never know him.
Pat and family:
I want to express my sincere condolences in Roy’s passing. I remember all of the fun times when you guys were dating. Roy was a fun and entertaining guy who will be missed.
Deepest condolences to the entire Family
Roy was a great guy. Heaven is a better place with him in it.
We heard today at Mass at Ascension of Roy’s passing. Please accept our deepest sympathies for you Pat, your children and grandkids. I can hear his booming laugh even now.
So very sorry to hear about Roy’s passing. We have fond memories of family camping next to the Avery’s with the Scouts. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Pat & family,
My deepest sympathy to you all. Such a beautiful video for Roy. I sure like the pic of Roy walking with Elizabeth as a bride. When I think of Roy, I think of a man who made his family a priority. I recall seeing some of the beautiful pieces of furniture Roy made throughout your home. Pat when you were
Michael & Tony’s Scout leader……..Roy was never too far away ready & willing to help.
RIP Roy Avery
