Vipin Bhatt

Vipin B. Bhatt, a strong-willed man of minimal words, was forever silenced early morning on Mon, December 16, 2019. While most are immersed in the hustle and scurry of the modern world, Bhatt found his strength far from the echo of judgments and opinions. Instead his ability to sit in the quiet solitude of his thoughts led him to a powerful self-awareness and understanding that very few possess. Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, “Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string.” Vipin lived life to his vibration.

As a pioneer for his family Vipin immigrated to America in early 1970, a time when exploring overseas was rare. His keen intellect, sharp mind, and honed ability to communicate led him to earn several masters degrees, including an MBA. With a background including law and real estate, his successful career in finance earned him the title of Vice President of Frank B Hall and ultimately his own business. In achieving the American Dream, Vipin couldn’t enjoy the fruits of his labor without sponsoring and supporting his large extended family. He and his wife Damini literally opened up their home for over a decade, sowing the seeds and nurturing success and happiness for several generations.

Vipin was a consummate learner, always reading, listening and engaging in ideas. Vipin’s honed skills with oral and written communication merely showed his value for education. A poet at heart, Vipin’s words shifted paradigms whether he was talking to a family member, a class, fellow educators, powerful CEOs, community members, or non-profit organizations. His passion to improve lives may have been met with resistance, but Vipin was unshakable when he believed in a cause. His mission to help became his breath.

And part of his breathing was a passion for the arts. All it took was a single lesson in drawing for him to develop his own artistic skill, creating lifelike portraits ranging from family and friends to thought leaders and people he admired. His sense of perfection also led him to keen appreciation for the fine arts. Vipin could listen to a classical melody and recognize the artist, simply based on how a scale was played. His desire to spread the spiritual awakening of music led him to organize numerous concerts, support established and newer artists, and even create a course at Washington University for the appreciation of Indian classical music. Vipin’s ear for talent, skill, and purpose brought Indian culture to St. Louis with world renowned artists like Zakir Hussain and Ravi Shankar.

Although Vipin was typically soft-spoken, when he fervently believed in a cause he was not afraid to voice his convictions loudly. He lived intentionally, loved reservedly, and served others selflessly.

Vipin is survived by his wife Damini, who has faithfully stood beside him over 52 years. Vipin always said his wife has the gentleness and kindness of Mother Teresa. And her support allowed him to surpass boundaries. Three children Shruti Upadhyay (Ashish), Amisha Bhatt-Overkamp (Jake), and Sachin Bhatt (Timothy) and four grandchildren.

Dear Daminiben, Shruti, Amisha, Sachin ,
I am deeply sorry to find out my good friend Vipin has passed away – still hard to accept. He was an artist and his heart always had joy for portrait painting and music and was always finding the ways to bring good things to Saint Louis community to cherish. He was an instrumental to bring many famous artists and politicians to Saint Louis. He has left so many good memories with me and my family.
Certainly, we will miss him but he is in good hands. May he be in peace. May God Bless you all and family with comfort in this most difficult time.

    to Amisha and Family

As we approach this Sacred time of the year, the Solar Solstice it is an especially powerful time for the soul to transition from one way of being to another

However, such knowing does little to negate the shock and following tsunami of emotional pain of the loss from your presence of a “sun” unexpectedly extinguished.

This now is the reality of the journey called mourning that releases our sorrow and propels us into a new way of being as well

You have my prayers for his and your journey into the change

And my very best wishes for the fruits of his labor that reside in your beings to rise once again as the sweetest of songs to be experienced by generations to come through you in his honor

My deepest condolences. He was a good man. I met Vipin over 20 years ago when we were table mates for a week in Utah when we were attending the Stephen Covey 7-habits instructor training and certification. We were constantly tasked to break into pairs to work out a response to a hypothetical situation that required a Covey Institute-ish solution. I was so fortunate to be paired with him everytime, because his wit and wisdom helped me learn a little faster and gave me additional insight. During the week, he shared his portfolio of portraits that he had created. I admired them and he convinced me that I needed a signed print for my office. I chose the one of Abraham Lincoln, which I framed nicely and it has hung in my office ever since. After a few years we stopped corresponding through email and lost touch. Coincidently, I thought of him on the 16th as I took the print off of the wall because we are downsizing to a new location. I cherish the print and wanted my daughter to hang it in her office. In trying to convince her, I Googled his name to see if his art work had grown in value. It was then that I was shocked to learn that he had just died. I am so sorry for your loss, but from briefly knowing him and reading his obituary, it is obvious that he lived a full life and left his family and community many fond memories.
