Wayne Winfield Hudgins
Wayne Winfield Hudgins passed away quietly on Monday April 17. Born in July of 1927 in St. Louis to John and Irene Hudgins (Wayne). Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Anabel (McLean), Daughter Jean Maylack (Fallon), Son Jeffrey (Abbott), Grandchildren Beth, Bob and Jenny. Preceded in death by his parents John and Irene and his beloved brother Bryce.
Wayne graduated Cleveland High School with his lifelong friend Harold Warren and Wayne went on to receive a bachelors degree in business from Washington University after serving in the army. Soon after graduation, he married the love of his life Anabel and quickly started a long career with IBM. His IBM career took him and Anabel to Chicago Illinois, Briarcliff Manor New York and Princeton New Jersey. Wayne retired from IBM in 1983 and after the urging of his longtime friend and colleague Bob Fischer, he and Anabel moved back to St. Louis after accepting a position at McDonald Douglas Corp. where he remained as a Staff Vice President until his final retirement in1992. Wayne was grateful to be back in St. Louis where he was again close to family and friends such as Robert Shores whom Wayne cherished as one of his closest friends. Wayne and Anabel quickly joined Ladue Chapel in Clayton where Wayne deeply embraced fellowship and many friendships.
Wayne’s lifelong passion of faith and education, included his appointment as both a deacon and an elder at Nassau Presbyterian Church in Princeton, NJ and Wayne was one of 20 original students in the first class of Life Long Learning Institute at Washington University. Wayne’s love and commitment to LLI never wavered. Wayne was a long time facilitator of the Shakespeare class and also served as Chairman of the Executive Committee. He continued as a student through the 2016 school calendar. Wayne’s additional passions included a love of gardening, long walks, politics and his adored grandchildren. Known even in his final days for his wonderful smile, he would have wanted to thank all of the friends, family and caregivers who helped him and Anabel. His eternal gratitude to all for making his life so special.
A Memorial to celebrate Wayne’s life will be held on Saturday May 20th at 11:00am at Ladue Chapel 9450 Clayton Rd. St. Louis, MO 63124 followed by interment in the memorial garden on-site and a reception with family at the church to follow.
In Lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests donations be made to the “Scholarship Fund” at Life Long Learning Institute at Washington University.
Wonderful pictures! These memories will sustain the family in the years ahead. He was truly an outstanding man.
