Alice F. Hartle

Beloved wife of 61 years to Gary L. Hartle, devoted mother to Gary Robert Hartle, Melissa (Matthew) Cochran, and cherished stepmother to Tina Mason; loving grandmother to Ashley, Joshua Robert, Kate, and Jordan; dearest great grandmother to Marcie and the late Jenson Robert. Adoring daughter of the late Anton “Tony” and Alice “Allie” Pfeiffer; dear stepdaughter to the late Ruth Pfeiffer; treasured sister of the late Robert Pfeiffer.

Alice lived a healthy, and full life of 83 years. She is finally reunited with her parents and her big brother.

Alice “Allie” Faye Pfeiffer was born on May 18th, 1937. Alice’s love of nature and animals was formed during her early years on her grandfather’s farm in Fenton, MO. From an early age, Alice was musically inclined and learned to play the accordion, the piano, the organ, and the classical guitar. She tragically lost her mom and her big brother at a very young age; an immeasurable loss.

Alice met the love of her life, Gary Hartle, when she was 22. They were married in November of 1959 in St. Louis, MO. Alice and Gary spent some wonderful days living in California near the ocean, which is where their son Gary was born. They later moved back to St. Louis, MO and had their daughter Melissa. Alice’s greatest pride in life! She adored her children and especially her grandchildren. (Almost more than the many Boston Terriers she loved throughout the years.)

Alice was a lifelong learner. She earned a degree in social work and educated herself on many subjects. She was extremely active, an excellent tennis player, savvy with her iPhone, and an avid walker.

Alice was a giver. She cared for abused children by volunteering at the Salvation Army. Alice was passionate about saving animals and contributed to many different animal organizations. She was a volunteer at the Endangered Wolf Center of Eureka, MO. Alice’s life struggles inspired her to help others. She was a true empath, always having a kind word and a caring smile for those in need. Alice was selfless, and extremely generous.

Recently, when her doting husband Gary wasn’t fixing her favorite meals, Alice could be found taking long walks with her rescue dog Stitch, reading two to three non-fiction books a week, baking, or shopping for her granddaughters who lovingly called her “Nana.” The thoughtful treats, personalized treasures, and unconditional love that Nana gave her granddaughters will never be forgotten.

Alice’s Catholic faith was her foundation, and she often prayed to the Virgin Mary and all the saints in times of need. She loved her family and friends with all of her heart. Her authentic and very original words of advice would soothe the soul, and be repeated by all those who heard them. Alice’s quick wit and young heart made all who knew her, cherish her.

A funeral mass honoring our dear wife, mother, grandmother, and friend will take place at St. Michael the Archangel on Saturday, March 13th at 10:00 am. A short visitation in church will proceed mass at 9:00am. All COVID precautions will be in place. Please wear a mask, and keep at least 6 feet apart from those around you. Seating is currently limited to 110 guests.
