Susan (Teeter) Hagen

Susan (Teeter) Hagen, a longtime resident of House Springs and later resident of O’Fallon, died of COVID on March 21, 2021, with her daughter Carrie and grandson Sam at her side. Susan was born in Joplin, Missouri, on August 20, 1940, to Dorothy Nadine (Anderson) and Charles Marvin Teeter. The family moved to St. Louis in the mid-1940s. “Susie,” as she was known, grew up in Glendale and Kirkwood. She worked as an office manager for several different companies and a public utility, but is most fondly remembered for her creativity and love for small creatures. She loved to draw, paint, craft, and do needlework, and she took great pleasure in gardening and watching birds. She doted on her dogs Bear, Annie, and Bailey and put out food for wild animals as well. Her family meant a great deal to her, and she collected stories and heirlooms that her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews will treasure.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved sister and brother-in-law, a niece, first husband Jon P. Guirl, and second husband Allen R. Hagen, to whom she was married for 45 years. Her brother Chris Teeter and sister-in-law Donna Checkett of Columbia survive. She is missed by her children: Karen Dobkins of Maryland Heights and husband Frank; Gaia Guirl-Stearley of Columbia; Jon A. Guirl of Millington, Tennessee, and his wife Sylvia; and Carrie Mercer and her partner Kelley Johnson of Lake St. Louis. She is also mourned by grandchildren L. Caroline Stearley of Fulton and Sam Jordan and Leah Mercer of Wentzville; cousin Greg Patterson of Kansas City; nephew Evan Teeter of Columbia; and nephew Joe Sefton and nieces Becky Doerr and Sarah Travis of Indiana.

Susie’s ashes will be interred with her late husband’s at Jefferson Barracks. The family is planning a memorial service on what would have been her 81st birthday in August. In lieu of flowers, please help someone get their COVID vaccine or make a donation to an animal shelter or wildlife organization.

I am just hearing of this. I spent a lot of happy afternoons and nights at the Guirl’s as a teenager. I remember Sue as a vivacious and talented Mom with a wicked sense of humor. I had not seen the family in decades but my heart goes out to you all –
