Robert Gregory (Greg) Bailey
Robert Gregory (Greg) Bailey of Oakville, MO died Thursday, April 15, 2021. He was 67 years old. The cause of death was complications from cancer. He is the son of the late Robert Earl Bailey and Joyce R. Bailey nee Dudley.
Greg attended Shiloh Elementary School and O’Fallon Township High School. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1976 with a BA in political science. He also earned a MA degree for the University of Missouri – Columbia School of Journalism in 1979. He later earned a JD from Washington University School of Law in 1985.
He was the author of three books: “The Voyage of the F. H. Moore”, a novel set in Metro East, “Darryl Ray”, and a history book “The Herrin Massacre of 1922 – Blood and Cool in the Heart of America”. For 29 years he was the St. Louis correspondent for The Economist magazine. He contributed to many local and national newspapers and magazines including Time, The New Republic, Rolling Stone, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Progressive, Wired, Sierra, and many others here and abroad.
Greg was also a produced playwright, an adjunct professor for six colleges including SIU-E, and twice ran for public office form South St. Louis County as a Democrat. For 23 years he practiced law for civil, criminal, and appellate cases. He was admitted to the bar to practice in Missouri, Illinois, the District of Columbia, and Federal Courts.

I am so sorry to hear of Greg’s death although I knew it was coming. He was enormously creative, witty, good hearted, and compassionate. Greg was a true individual and I am grateful to have known him.
