Madreen H. Meyer

Madreen H. Meyer (89) of Chesterfield, Missouri, born November 23rd, 1931 passed away May 25th, 2021. Madreen was born in Belleville, Illinois, and was a resident of Ferguson, Missouri for 55 years. She was Harry ‘Perk’ & Madlyn Freiner’s daughter and was nicknamed Mick or Mickey. She was a Daddy’s girl and was known as Perk’s girl when she would fetch a pail of beer for her Dad from the local tavern after he returned home in the evening from his work scrubbing vats at a local Stag beer brewery.

Madreen had a passion since she was a little girl for science & nursing which became a lifelong pursuit. She was a graduate of the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1952. Madreen became the Operating Room Supervisor for Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis, MO. After raising her children, she returned to nursing with Laser Surgery Center Ophthalmologists. Her nursing passion continued post-career with 3,000+ hours of volunteer service to BJC Healthcare, specifically Christian Northwest & Northeast in their nursery and pre-operation units.

During her hospital and skilled nursing stay(s) these last 15 months she continued to encourage her younger nursing staff to pursue & expand their nursing education. Madreen met her husband, Dr. Paul S. Meyer, D.D.S. / M.S. (Orthodontist) in the cafeteria of Barnes Hospital when Paul was a graduate student of Washington University School of Dentistry. Madreen and Paul married in 1956 and were married 61 years.

She enjoyed travel (49 states) including multiple trips to Europe, camping, flower gardening, knitting, music, theater, reading nursing updates, hosting foreign exchange students from Germany, and having her grandchildren for overnights. In addition, she enjoyed her crossword puzzles and watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune when possible. An avid sports fan, and in particular a St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan, (catcher Yadier Molina was her favorite), she developed a love of sports through her father who was a catcher for the Heine Meine baseball team in southern Illinois.

Madreen was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Ferguson for 60 years serving in roles as church elder and deacon. Her congregation has been a big part of her life both in joy and sorrow and has touched her heart in so many other ways. She was the Past President Deaconess School of Nursing Alumnae, former Deaconess Hospital Elder & Trustee, former President Auxiliary to the Greater St. Louis Dental Society, and held P.E.O. Membership.

Madreen was also a longtime volunteer with her husband Paul at the University of Missouri St. Louis / Touhill Center of Performing Arts. Lastly, her life was about the relationships she had with her neighbors, friends, church members, the medical community, relatives, and education with her Deaconess Hospital endeavors. She cherished each of those special relationships till the end of her life. Faithful daughter of the late Harry & Madlyn Freiner. Survived by daughter Renee Richards, son Mark-(Sandy), son Kent (deceased), grandchildren Lance-(Lauren) Richards, Logan Richards, Rachael Meyer, Brandon Meyer, great-grandchildren Noah, Emily, Madilyn-(deceased) Richards, and nieces & nephews.

Madreen H. Meyer was a very special person! She touched so many people’s lives through work in hospitals, church association, and of course the wonderful family that she raised. Madreen got to live a good life, not many people are able to be married 61 years and visit 49 of the states. She is dearly missed by all whom knew her!

Our dear Mick was a wonderful woman. The memories at the Pembroke house are still so fresh in my mind. Doc and Mick were the most loving couple and shared that love with everyone and everyone was family. Praying for all of the family and friends touched by the Meyers

My heart is so heavy over the news of your mom. We were her neighbor at Baywood Villages and she was a wonderful, kind and beautiful lady. While no words of mine can comfort you at this time, please remember the wonderful memories you have of her.

I knew Mrs Meyer as a friend of Renee. She and Dr Meyer always made me and my friends feel welcome and wanted. Mrs Meyer truly preached the Gospel, always, and yet never seemed to need to use words.
    Gif has another Angel,
    Slainte!

My condolences to the “Mickey” Meyer family. She was an activist to many of the Lake Pembroke community. May she have eternal peace along with Paul.

As a classmate at Desconess SchoolOf Nursing we became close friends. Both of us enjoyed hosting reunions of our class in coordination with the annual Deaconess Alumni meetings. There are very few of our classmates left but we are glad to support the Deaconess Nurse Ministries to keep the name alive in St Louis

I met Madreen through the Deaconess Alumni Assoc. I graduated in 1977. She always talked to me when we saw one another at Deaconess events. I lived in Belleville and she would share stories about growing up in Belleville. My sympathy to her family and friends. I am so happy I was able to meet her and spend a few minutes with her.
