Mary Marcelline Cooney Miller
On August 9, 2021, Mary Marcelline Cooney Miller passed away peacefully at her home in Ballwin, Missouri surrounded by family. She was 91.
Mary was born on March 9, 1930, in St. Joseph Missouri, the fifth of ten children born to Marcelline L. and Harry J. Cooney. She was raised in Sedalia, Missouri, and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1948. Her sisters introduced her to Henry “Bud” Miller in Chicago Illinois and she and Bud were married on October 16, 1948.
The couple lived in Chicago from 1948 until 2002. Residing in South Shore, later, on the Near Northside, and finally in the Bridgeport neighborhoods. Bud passed away on March 17, 2002. Mary and her daughter Marcy relocated to Ballwin Missouri in 2018 to be closer to relatives as it became apparent that Mary’s illness was progressing and would leave her incapacitated.
Mary worked for her husband Bud at Chicago Wheel Manufacturing Company and later as a personal shopper for Marshall Field and Company.
Mary and Bud had four children Mary C. Keeler (Joseph), Mark E. Miller (Sarah Etta Eckrich), Martha Costigliola (Charles), and Marcy Miller. She was blessed with six grandchildren Jesse Miller, Jennifer Miller, Mark Costigliola (Itayara Marinho), Michael Costigliola (Amanda Klatkiewicz), Colin Keeler (Ashley Thomas), Jude Keeler, and 3 great-grandchildren Alexander, Alice, and Jonathan. Mary adored babies and was a devout Catholic and member of Opus Dei whose faith sustained her, brought her joy, and comforted her in moments of pain and sorrow. Her family, faith, and friends were her treasures in this life. Mary’s laugh was infectious, her humor quick and fun and her smile enduring. Mary loved a gathering and was happiest when surrounded by her friends and family. Mary’s family and friends could always count on her. Loyalty, love, and generosity were her hallmarks.
Mary was preceded in death by her mother Marcelline, father Harry, sisters Jeanne Frese, Helen Cooney, Betty Anne Cooney, brother James Cooney, and husband Henry E. “Bud” Miller.
She is survived by her children: Mary Catherine, Mark, Martha, and Marcy as well as her siblings Jack Cooney, Martha Mac Mann, Madeline Whyte, Michael Cooney (Robbie), Teresa Kleber (Brian), and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Due to Covid concerns, a Mass of Catholic Burial will be held in the Spring when the family can gather safely. Mary will be buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery next to Bud.
