Michael Wayne Stone

Michael Wayne Stone “Stoney” (64) of DeSoto, MO passed away unexpectedly at St. John’s Mercy Hospital on January 22, 2022, after undergoing heart surgery. He was born on March 23, 1957, in Kennett, MO, the son of James Vernon Stone (Regina) and Vonda “Bonnie” Faye Smothers (Bob). He graduated from Kennett High School and worked with his dad in construction until eventually starting his own flooring installation business.  He mastered his craft and would go on to teach numerous family members and friends the trade.

Mike was a child of God and a family man first and foremost.  He worked tirelessly every day to provide for his loved ones and would give the shirt off his back to a stranger in need.  He genuinely cared for everyone who crossed his path.  He was a devoted husband and a proud father to all of his children.  He enjoyed spending time with family, summer barbeques and pool parties, fishing, watching sports, live music events, and taking naps in random places.  He was always telling jokes or making up silly and outrageous stories and song lyrics.  Mike cherished his grandchildren and truly was the world’s greatest Papa! Each of his grandkids were “Papa’s boy” or “Papa’s girl” and received living room rollercoaster rides, tractor rides, and bribes to tickle his back.  He was larger than life with a heart of gold that was ever so tender.  He carried the weight of the world on his shoulders and barely complained because he was proud to bear the burden for those he loved so dearly.  He will be sorely missed by all who knew him but his memories will live on in our hearts forever.

Mike is survived by his wife Cheryl Lynn Stone, children Amy (Robert) Sharp, Rachael Piel, Samantha (David) Lee, Madelyn (Brent) Ponzar, Michael Stone, and his 15 grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.  He was preceded in death by his father Jim, mother Bonnie, stepmother Regina, stepfather Bob, brother Kevin, sister Lesa, sons BJ and Adam.

A memorial service will be held on February 19, 2022, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at The American Legion Post 253 located at 849 American Legion Dr., Festus, MO 63028.  In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting monetary donations be made to his wife, Cheryl, to aid in the funeral and hospital expenses.
