Elmer Priest

Mr. Elmer Eugene (Gene) Priest went home to be with our Lord on February 8, 2009. He was born July 9, 1923 to Carl and Edith Priest, both deceased. He was the eldest of several brothers and sisters, all deceased, with the exception of Mr. Paul Priest of Crystal City. He is predeceased by his wife, Stella Priest. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Linda McGowan of Bonne Terre, MO; a grandson, Mr. Brian Scott of Missouri; nieces, nephews, and many, many friends.

Mr. Priest has lived the last 14 years in the Cedar Hill/Dittmer, MO area with his caregivers, Mr. Tim and Kathy Spruell. He has left an impact on our lives for which we are forever grateful.

Mr. Priest was a decorated World War II hero being one of the fewest survivors on the USS Birmingham CL-62. Mr. Priest taught himself to read and write when young, but went on to write many poems and commentaries for the local papers for many years. He would share his stories of youth to all who would listen and encourage everyone in the Lord.

He has been a long standing member of High Ridge Church of Christ in High Ridge, MO; always leading with strength and prayer. He would write encouraging letters and send cards whenever a fellow member was going through a rough patch. He served as he was able and attended as often as he could. We thank God for sending such a wonderful person into our lives.

Gene was a source of strength to many and a friend to all. He loved gardening, feeding and watching birds, and singing old songs without a moment’s notice. He would share his memories, vegetables, and flowers with everyone. He will be greatly missed.

Gene, I will keep all the memories of the good times we had: The poems you wrote, the prayers we shared, listening to bluegrass, watching the Cardinals on TV, hunting mushrooms. I will miss you, but I know we will see each other again someday and that you are always only a thought away. Denny
