Carey Scott Peterson

It is with great sadness to report the passing of Carey Scott Peterson, on May 15, 2022, from an adenocarcinoma of the lungs, a genetically derived variant of Cancer. Fortunately, Scott was home during his time under hospice care and was surrounded by family and friends as he passed peacefully.

Most frequently Carey went by either him middle name, Scott, or his nickname bestowed upon him by his Delta Chi fraternity brothers, “Norm” after the beloved and affable barstool character from “Cheers.”   Scott was, himself a larger-than-life character, in so many ways.

Physically imposing upon first impression, at 6’5” with a deep, booming voice, Scott greeted everyone he met with a baritone “Hello Sir”, and a rock-solid handshake. Though once anyone got to know him, would soon learn he was more of a big Teddy-bear at heart, pulling his loved ones in for his famous, massive, and at times crushing bear-hugs.

Scott loved, big. This is just one reason his untimely Cancer diagnosis, at 56 will leave such a large void in our lives. There was so much yet for him to do, and many memories yet to be made. Late in his life, he spoke often about still having so much more to do, more sales to make, regretful to those who he needed to take care of him.

Being born in Chicago, Illinois on May 20, 1965, to Roy Peterson (father, deceased) and mother, Daryl (Wagner). Scott was especially fond of his uncle Glenn and aunt Lisa Peterson. Daryl later would remarry James F. Anzelmo (deceased 2007) and 9 years later in 1974, Scott would get the little brother “he always wanted” in Jay Anzelmo. Scott would often dress his baby brother up in, what he thought were funny outfits, serving to amuse him until his little brother could fight back…together destroying much of the surrounding drywall and glass windows at their home near Henry Elementary.

After graduating from Parkway West Senior High School, Chesterfield, MO in 1983, Scott eventually landed in Springfield, Missouri at SMSU where he would study Hotel & Restaurant Management. Scott would join the Delta Chi Fraternity house, having some of the best times of his life, meeting many lifelong friends and experiencing all that life had to offer (a twenty something). It was here, he also met his first wife, Erin Foley.

Just after college, Scott & Erin moved to Indiana, then Kansas City, and finally settling in Nevada, Missouri where they happily shared 10 years together. Scott’s desire to start a family of their own, and Erin’s reluctance to have children would eventually cause their amicable divorce.

Soon after, Scott met Cindy Cook Hutchison, and her three girls, Langley, Josey, and Chloe. Not only did he fall in love with Cindy, but also dove headfirst into being a stepfather to her children, and whole-heartily loved them has his own. As the girls grew up, they too would start families, which made Scott burst with pride as it grew and grew.

Scott greatest gift in life was being a father and grandfather to: Langley Stroud (Nathan), Josey Hutchison (Hunter), and Chloe Ast (Karston), with grandchildren: Keagan, Jett, Poppy, Kopelyne, Gatelen, & Walker. Preceded in death by his granddaughter Kaidlyne.

For those who knew Carey Scott Peterson, or just “Norm,” you are welcome to join family, and friends in a Celebration of Life service, hosted by Daryl Schaefer, Jay and Christy Anzelmo on Saturday, June 4th from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm at John Mineo’s, 13490 Clayton Rd, Town and Country, MO 63131
