Olga Powers
Olga Marie (Zsombok) Powers passed away at her home on Wednesday, February 25, 2009. She was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1933. When Olga was a young girl, her parents moved her and her sister to their grandparents’ farm to protect them from the fighting during World War II. In the late 1950’s, Olga fled occupied Hungary and immigrated to St. Louis. There, she met and married Jack Powers. Together they had two sons, Joseph and Michael. In the mid-1960’s, Olga and Jack started Dardenne Gardens, a nursery and landscaping business. Olga was a strong and independent woman, with a strong work ethic and a deep love for her sons. An avid reader, she consumed books on the many topics that interested her. She had a passion for French furnishings and garden symmetry. She often shared her talents at needlework and traditional Hungarian cooking. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Olga is survived by Mike and his wife, Dory; Joe and his wife, Kate; and her three strong, independent and beautiful granddaughters; Ashley, Mallory, and Olivia.
Thank you to all of you for your prayers, visits, cards, flowers, and condolences. It meant a great deal to Olga during her illness and has meant a great deal to us.
Joe & Mike,
It is with deep sadness that I hear of the passing of your Mother. I have followed her in these last several months through the eyes and accounts of Karen, Kathie and my parents.
Memories of coming to Dardene Gardens, riding tractors and motorcycles, shooting BB guns, and basking in the warmth of the house that your Mother created are some of my fondess childhood memories. I can remember your mother’s excellent cooking, her warmth and love, and her ever present smile….
You and your families are in our thoughts and prayers.
With Love,
Bob, Jen, and Family

Joe and Mike,
In my eyes, Aunt Olga was the epitome of beauty and grace. If she was at the same family gathering I was drawn to her just to hear her speak. Not only because she was so sweet but I loved her accent! She was and always will be a shining star in my eyes.
My condolences to both of you and your families.

Joe and Mike, I am so sorry to learn that your mother is gone. She was a beautiful woman and she was a loving aunt. When my family got together with yours, Aunt Olga always made me feel loved and happy to be with her. I considered myself lucky to have an “exotic” relative with a sweet personality and a lovely accent. You are both in my thoughts and prayers. Kathy (Tom and Lise’s daughter)
