Stephen (Steve) Ambrose Coughlin
Stephen (Steve) Ambrose Coughlin was born February 18, 1936 and raised in Madison, Wisconsin. Steve passed away February 9, 2023 and he was the youngest of seven children. He graduated from University of Wisconsin High School in Madison where he served as senior class president. Stephen married Corrine Ann Wiggert on December 28, 1957. Together they lived in Madison, Wisconsin; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Alliance, Ohio; settling finally in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1975.
Steve worked as an engineer, both metallurgical and welding. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, his first job was with Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, PA. He then worked at Babcock and Wilcox in Alliance, OH. While there he graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a Master’s in Materials Science and Engineering. In Saint Louis, he spent 20 years with ACF Industries where he was director of welding engineering for railroad freight cars. Besides his work, Steve was an active volunteer with a wide variety of organizations including St. Peter and Paul Shelter, Pruitt Igoe Development Corporation and Habitat for Humanity.
A wonderful father, Steve encouraged his children to pursue their own passions, even if it meant having five children in five different states. Steve follows into the next life his wife Corrine, parents Ambrose and Helen Coughlin, brothers Joseph, James and William and sisters Virginia, Elizabeth and Helen (Rita). He is survived by daughter Deborah and sons Michael, Mark, David and James, along with nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Steve was a lovely, kind and smart man. The world is a better a place because of all his contributions to others. A wonderful uncle.
We will really miss him.
We heard such wonderful stories about our father. If you have a small story or comment we would love to hear it. These are the things that comfort us.
Stephen “MICHAEL” Coughlin, son
Steve was a great husband and father, and a special neighbor and friend…a true gentleman. He and Corrine will always hold a special place in our hearts. Rest in peace, Steve…now you can be together forever with Corrine.
Hi cousins, we were so fortunate to have uncle Steve and aunt Corrine in our lives. I remember many happy times. There was a visit when we were young to Alliance OH — Debbie and I were standing on the swing set glider and put our heads through the posts – there was a scary moment when we got stuck! Corrine and Bernice got a bit stern about that! I enjoyed each visit they made to La Crosse and looked forward to hearing and seeing the latest in technology- be it a watch or tracker or other techno wizardry! Very impressed! I also share a birthday Feb 18 and will toast him this Saturday – a very special person indeed! Your cousin Lisa (Wurzel) Remus
