Joan Lydic
Joan E. (nee Geoghegan) Lydic, age 78, passed away on April 6, 2023 at Avalon Garden Nursing Center from cancer.
Born August 14, 1944 in New Rochelle, NY to the late Arthur J. Geoghegan and Betty (nee Billings) Geoghegan, Ms. Lydic was a graduate of the Ursuline Academy-New Rochelle, NY and held a Bachelor’s Degree from St. Louis University and Masters from Boston College. After completion of studies in Boston, she returned to St. Louis in the early 70’s and began a career working with children affected by learning disabilities, initially with the Missouri School for the Blind and later with the Miriam School. In the mid 1980’s, she became self-employed as a consultant supporting and educating families with learning-disabled children.
Preceded in death by her parents, she is survived by a daughter, Courtney G. Lydic of St. Peters, MO, brother John A. Geoghegan (wife Patricia) of Rye, NY, sister Betty A. Weldon (William) of Pembroke, MA, and brothers William Geoghegan (wife Judith) of Galway, Ireland and Arthur J. Geoghegan (wife Ellie) of Harwich, MA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Avalon Garden Nursing Center for their understanding and kind treatment during Joan’s bout with cancer and her time in hospice.
Final arrangements are being conducted by St. Louis Cremation, 2135 Chouteau Ave, St. Louis, MO, where a memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at 2:00 PM with visitation to follow until 5:00 PM.

Joan was my dear friend since our SLU days. Her energetic, compassionate and intelligent spirit was infectious. Joan always asked about her friends and their families before she shared what was happening in her life. Joan was always concerned about others. Her daughter Courtney was his greatest joy. ..she loved her without respite. Joan you deserve to free. I love you dear friend.
I brought Joan communion every Sunday during her time at Avalon Gardens, Joan and her roommate Mary were my favorites as we would sit and talk about families and activities for 15-20 minutes every Sunday morning. I’ll miss talking to her. She was such a sweet person.
What a beautiful write up and tribute to our sister, Joan, and the collage video brings back lots of great memories. Thanks Courtney for all that you’ve done and being there with your mom at the end and weeks before. I know you meant everything to Joan and she left this world in peace. Joan was a beautiful, smart, talented, and loving person. We had so many laughs together over the years!! I will miss her every day!!
Joan and I became friends at SLU and continued our friendship with 2 trips to Europe, summer 1968 and summer 1969. She was a loving and lovely person and embraced everyone into her circle of friends. Rest In Peace, Joan.
