James Peters

In Loving Memory of James Walter Peters

James Walter “Jim” Peters, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 5, 2023. His departure leaves a tremendous void in the lives of all who knew him. Jim lived a life filled with love, laughter, and dedication to his family, church and community. He will be forever cherished and deeply missed by all who knew him.

Born on September 7, 1947, Jim was the son of Melvin and Norma (Cain) Peters. He grew up primarily in Haysville, Kansas and was known for his generosity, faith, kindness, and strong work ethic. From an early age, Jim was a very hard worker and an entrepreneur. Jim had a successful career in retail owning Pete’s AG Grocery Store and then Schulte Country Store for nearly 30 years. He closed out his career as a school bus driver for Goddard Public Schools and later as an over the road truck driver and enjoyed hauling RV’s across the country as well. He liked to joke that he was “Semi” retired.

Jim met the love of his life, Mary of 53 years, at Gibson’s Discount Store in Garden City, KS. Their love story was nothing short of extraordinary as they were married only 4 weeks and 5 days after they 1st met. They shared a bond built on trust, respect, and an unwavering commitment to one another. They were seldom apart and did everything together. Their journey together was marked by countless adventures on their motorcycle, overcoming obstacles, and creating a beautiful family together.

Jim and Mary raised their 3 children, Jeyson, Mandi and Jeff, instilling in them the values of faith, family, integrity and a strong work ethic. Jim took great pride in witnessing their accomplishments and was very proud of them and all his grandchildren.

Jim enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, riding his Harley and traveling with Mary, BBQ competitions with his best friend Frank, playing games during the holidays with his family, making waffles and little smokies for his grandkids, watching James Bond movies, listening to good music, woodworking, fishing, camping and boating at Table Rock Lake where he and Mary retired in 2017.

James Walter “Jim” Peters is survived by his loving wife, Mary of 53 years, his children, Jeyson Peters and wife Dawn of Nixa, MO, Amanda “Mandi” Wells and husband Paul of Wichita, Kansas, Jeff Barnett and wife Nelly of Wichita, Kansas, his siblings, Mike Peters (Mary) of Topeka, Bonnie Jacobs (Guy) of Golden, Missouri, Dale Peters of Shell Knob, Missouri, and 3 Grandsons and 9 Granddaughters, and a wide circle of relatives and good friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Jim was a true family man who loved his family more than anything. He was generous with his time and resources and was always willing to help a friend.

RIP Uncle Jim. I will always cherish the memories I had when I graduated high school and moved in with Grandma Norma Peters who had a house you and my Dad built that was attached to your house. I loved visiting you a the gas station and just sitting at the table talking. You will be missed sorely. Much love from Oregon. Your niece Karyn Sheen
