The last time we spoke with Steve was the Friday afternoon before he passed. Marilyn was helping him try to get positioned comfortably on the couch so he could watch the Cardinals game. Over the speakerphone we could hear how weak and frail he was. I asked him what he liked to watch on TV and he said “the Cardinals. I wanted to see them win one more World Series.” Steve loved his baseball. Let’s Go Cards!! (for Steve)

I’ll always remember Steve for his quick wit. He was funny in a dry sense of humor way. He was always a great guy in the old neighborhood, to high school to the end.

Our sympathies to Marilyn and the entire family who will miss him so much. Your memories of him will make him eternally with you.

Marilyn…My condolences! If Steve was like my Jim he was looking forward to being with our Lord and Savior. You no doubt don’t remember us but we both were in a TLC group at Faith Lutheran Church years ago. I recognized your name and felt I needed to be in touch during this difficult, yet joyous time in celebrating a Christian life well lived. The “Best is yet to be”. Sincerely remaining in His loving arms…Jeanette Kille

I met the Wettig family when I was about 4 and they moved in across the street, with Michelle and Melissa quickly becoming my best friends and would spend an uncountable numbers of hours at their house over the next 15 years. They adopted this cat his name was Buddy. They didn’t get him as a kitten they got him middle-aged and he was set in his ways. I always remember thinking that but he was so perfect for that household because him and Steve just had this Bond. I sometimes would say that they had the same personalities LOL I remember it seemed like Steve never missed a Cardinals game on TV and if he did it was because he was at the stadium watching it. To say he was passionate about Cardinals baseball would be an understatement. He was always there for his wife and daughters and his neighbors. I can’t imagine what it’s like to raise two teenage girls, as I had boys, but he made it through and did it with style and grace and now Michelle and Melissa both have beautiful families of their own and I know he could not be more proud. One of my fondest memories of Steve is his excitement of when I was confirmed at church. It was then that I realized his true love for the Lord. Another phone memory I have is him sitting out with my parents in the other neighbors (they would rotate driveways daily) with their coolers and their laughter yelling at the people driving too fast on the street to “slow down!” Always being the ever protecting guardians of all of us neighborhood kids.
My condolences Marilyn, Michelle, and Melissa on your loss. Thank you for sharing your Husband and Father with all of us.
