Matthew Brewster

Matthew Stephen Brewster left this earth on September 9, 2024. He was a loving husband, father, brother, son and so much more. He will be loved and remembered by friends and family near and far.

Matthew grew up in Edmond, Oklahoma with his mother and father, Michele and Dick; and his siblings Taylor, Mike and Sean. He was so proud to be a big brother and had a large supportive family. He met his wife, Tara Decker, in 2014 through a chance encounter. They were engaged six months later on Christmas Day. Matthew and Tara married on October 24, 2015, surrounded by friends and family. Their love and commitment to one another was palpable to all who knew them. Matthew and Tara completed their family with their daughter, Maeve Beverly, on January 20, 2018. Together they raised a beautiful, precious and precocious child. Matt’s career allowed Tara to focus on raising Maeve for these first 6 years of her life. Matthew was an incredible father. Even when he was shipped out on his aircraft carrier or was traveling for a company, he was a present and attentive father and husband. He loved his girls deeply, and they adored him.

Matthew joined the Navy in 2013. He served and sacrificed for his country for eight years. Following his military service, he received his degree in Nuclear Engineering. Matt was working as a field service engineer at IBA Industrial. Matthew enjoyed his work. He had wonderful friends throughout all stages of his life. He loved all things fantasy. He participated weekly in a D&D group, he loved to read, and filled his daughter’s life with imagination and creativity. He was strong in his convictions and instilled amazing values in his daughter.

On Monday afternoon, September 9, Matthew lost his battle with mental illness. Matthew believed there was no shame in mental illness struggles and would want this part of his story shared. He fought incredibly long and hard to stay with his family, but clinical depression is a horrible illness. While this loss is unbearable, his family is so proud of all the help he asked for and received.

Matthew is survived by his wife, Tara Brewster; his daughter Maeve Brewster; mother, Michele Brewster; sister, Taylor Brewster; brothers Mike Brewster, Sean Brewster and Grady Brewster; nephew Kal Strong; father-in-law, Daniel Decker; mother-in-law, Kimberly Decker; sister-in-law Kelsey Decker; nephew Bennett Kahre; and many other loving family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dick Brewster; his grandfather, Dennis Gengler; his grandmother, Tonya Gengler; his aunt, Teri Gengler; and his sister Kiley Smith.

While flowers are appreciated, a greater help from those who would like to do so, would be financial assistance, either through food delivery gift cards or through Venmo (@thebrewstergirls) or PayPal.

Memories, prayers, or condolences can be shared with his family at tara.brewster@yahoo.com.

    Dear Tara, Maeve, and family,

It was a blessing to have met Matthew. Our work together at IBA was limited, but in his one lengthy and very personal discussion with me he shared so much of himself. He told me about his love for Tara, Maeve, and his extended family. He also spoke of the challenges he had, which was intensely meaningful because of similarities in my own family. Mathew’s brilliant mind and passion were apparent in his every gesture and word. The conversation was so remarkable that I shared it at length with my wife the following day and I will remember it always.

Matthew made a huge impression on me and his departure has left a profound sense of loss, which cannot come close to the grief you all must be feeling. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May the beauty of Mathew’s spirit be the memory you carry as a blessing.

    With Deepest Sympathies, Gregory
