Charles Ray Evans

Charles Ray Evans, age 90, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2024, in Fenton, MO, surrounded by his loving family. Formerly of Champaign, IL, Charles was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and friend, he lived a life full of wisdom, compassion, faith, and dedication to those around him. 

Born on August 29, 1934, Charles grew up with a love of history and a deep appreciation for learning, a passion that shaped his career as a beloved high school history teacher. His students remember him not only for his remarkable storytelling and profound knowledge of political and world history but also for the care and encouragement he extended to each of them.

An avid reader, Charles was seldom without a book in hand, always eager to explore current events and revisit the pages of history. He was also an enthusiastic sports fan, spending countless weekends cheering on his favorite football and basketball teams.

Charles was a man of faith, dedicated to his church community at Wesley United Methodist Church in Urbana, Illinois where he was engaged in the Green Team, promoting environmental stewardship and receiving community recognition. His kindness and generosity extended beyond his family and friends to neighbors and strangers alike, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce, and his daughter, Melissa Shanks (Mark). He is survived by his second wife, Eleanor; his sister, Carrol Sparks; his children, Deb Delmonico (Frank) of Sellersville, PA, Tim Evans of Peoria, IL, and Gayla Maze (Brian) of St. Louis, MO; stepsons, Eric Brooks, Steve Buckner and David Buckner; seven grandchildren, Chris, Crystal, Erin, Alex, Stephanie, Jason, Josh; and great grandchildren, Tyler, Emily, Natalie, Avery and Sophia. 

Funeral services for Charles will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, 10:00 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church in Urbana, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, reflecting his lifelong commitment to faith and community.

His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, as a loving, compassionate, and faithful man who enriched the lives of so many.
