Betsy Fought

Betsy Fought of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully at 86 on
September 10, 2025.  Betsy was born to James and Fern Schutt with her
given name of Kathryn Irene Schutt. That moniker was quickly replaced by a
nurse who thought she looked like a Betsy Wetsy Doll.  Betsy was so named
and it stuck for the rest of her life.

Betsy grew up in Bloomsburg with an older sister, Joanne Sarnoski, (who we
lost last December – we miss you and love you, Nannie) and her younger
siblings, sister TJ and brother Ron.  Betsy went to school in Scott Township
and spent most of her young life in Pennsylvania.

Moving to the Jersey Shore later, Betsy opened a flower shop aptly named
“Flowers by Betsy” in Oakhurst, New Jersey and had amazing success for
more than ten years.  She loved everything about owning her own business,
from her crazy customers to her exceptional employees to the thing she really
loved – the act of creating beauty.

Like so many people known by a single name, Betsy was a force of nature.
You could always tell when Betsy was in a room from the moment she
arrived.  She was like the Sun… She shined with a dynamic light and exuded
an ingratiating warmth.  Betsy had the ability to make everyone in her orbit
feel at home.

Betsy loved her family more than anything.  She beamed with pride for her
two children.  She adored her sisters and brother.  Although Betsy was close
to all her family, her sisters, Nannie and  TJ held a special place in her life and
her heart as they lived near one another for many years.  And, of course, she
loved her now deceased husband Thomas Fought madly.  Quoting Betsy, “He
was my first love and my last love.”

Survived by her son, Scott Morette and his wife Beth, and her daughter,
Suzanne Ballantine Kernan and her husband Rick as well as her two younger
siblings, sister TJ Schutt-Hughes and brother, Ron Schutt and his wife Rose.
Betsy has three grandchildren, Ryan, Bailey and Mychal Kernan. Her
grandchildren were the absolute light in Betsy’s life.  As Betsy would say, “The
most wonderful gifts.”

How does one convey in a paragraph or two someone’s extraordinary and
unique life?  More importantly, how will she be remembered?

Betsy will be remembered for being Betsy… and that is pretty damn great.

There will be no services but if you wish to honor Betsy, please donate to St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
