Matthew E. Cox
Died peacefully in his sleep with family by his side on Tuesday October 14th 2025 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was 70 years young.
Matt, one of seven, was born and raised in Chicago just two blocks from Wrigley field under circumstances that necessitated self-reliance and ingenuity. As a result he could make or fix anything by cobbling together a solution from a box of spare parts and scraps of nothing.
As a young teen Matt was fortunate to be taken under the wing of Joe D’Agostino. Joe and his wife Jan, treated him like a member of the family. From Joe Matt learned how to make excellent deep dish Chicago style pizza, how to manage a restaurant and how to be a loving, involved and extremely dependable father and provider.
Matt moved to Webster Groves and vicinity 30 years ago to raise his family with his ex-wife Cindy Cox. He was a Cubs fan surrounded by a sea of Cardinals fans yet remained an outspoken supporter of his beloved home team.
Matt was known and loved for the enthusiasm and joy with which he dished out Chicago style deep dish and thin crust pizza made in his Webster Groves kitchen for family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and many more.
Matt is survived by his cherished sons, Adam Cox, Andrew Cox and Kyle Cox. To them he gladly gave the best of himself, raising them, alongside his ex-wife Cindy Cox, to be kind, resourceful and innovative thinkers.
Matt is also survived by his much-loved sister Jeanette Howard, who as a child herself often took care of him and her younger siblings. His brother Michael Cox, who came from Chicago and sat by his bedside for the last week of his life and his brother Ronnie Cox whose calls and words of kindness were a light for Matt. Also survived by nieces and nephews, Jenny Howard-Marton, Greg Howard, Michelle Cox, Brian Howard, Ronald Cox, Vickie Cox, Nicholas Pomrening, Bridgette Ralliford, Alex Cox and Stephanie Genescritti, Cory Cox and Ryan Cox.
Matt is predeceased by his mother, Patricia Cox (nee Crowley) and father, Richard E Cox, sister Patricia (Patsy) Pomrening, brother Robert (Bobby) Cox and brother Richard (Butch) Cox.
