Thomas Thale
Thomas Thale passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026.
He was born on November 20, 1944, in Norwich, Connecticut, to Dr. Thomas and Janette (Brennan) Thale. Thomas was raised in St. Louis where he graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1963. After earning his undergraduate degree from St. Louis University, Thomas joined the US Army and served two combat tours in Vietnam as a Lieutenant.
Returning to St. Louis, Thomas attended Webster University and completed his MBA. He then began to pursue his lifelong career as an entertainer.
Throughout his life, Thomas pursued many interests, but his heart belonged to performance, specifically pantomime and juggling. His boundless creativity and gift for thinking beyond the ordinary shaped a career devoted to bringing joy to others. He was happiest when he was on stage.
His talents included mime, stilt walking, magic, juggling, and costume characters. Thomas provided entertainment for venues all around St. Louis as City Mimes starting in 1976. You may have seen him around town on stilts as Uncle Sam at July 4th, or at First Night, again on stilts, ringing in the New Year. Most dear to his heart was Thomas’ turn at Santa around Christmas. He did home visits, party visits, and worked for years as the Santa at the North Pole for the Polar Express at St. Louis Union Station.
Thomas married his wife, Tracey, in 1991 and they welcomed a son, Brennan Thomas, a few years later. Thomas was a patient husband and a doting father.
Friendship was one of the great blessings of his life. Thomas had a remarkable circle of lifelong friends — Gene, Byron, Bruce, John, and Jack (deceased) — who stood by one another through every season. What began as years of riding bikes as kids on DeTonty Street later became cherished monthly brunches. Thomas had many, many friends. He loved to play basketball with another bunch of lifelong buddies, telling his wife they were his “business meetings”.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Tracey; his sisters, Bette Voorhees (Darrell), Joan, and Martha Deitsch (Ira); and a sister-in-law, Brenda Thale. His nieces include Jami Voorhees, Rachel Wilkerson (Jerome), and Talia Deitsch. One nephew, Nicholas Voorhees (Jaycee). Grand nieces are Miriam, Cara, and Abby; grand nephews are Cole, Teagan, and Seth.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents and his brother James. Also, his beloved son, Brennan Thomas, the light of his life.
In his final months at Delmar Gardens on the Green, he presented himself as a “goodwill ambassador,” greeting residents and forming friendships wherever he went. To Thomas, there were no strangers.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff and hospice care teams at Delmar Gardens on the Green for their compassionate and devoted care.
Thomas Thale will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
