Moyer 5

Robert Marshall Moyer

Robert Marshall Moyer, age 81, of O’Fallon MO, passed away peacefully on 05/09/2026.

He was born on April 15, 1945, to Neva Dunn and Thoburn Moyer, and was named after his maternal grandfather, so everyone called him Marshall.

Marshall grew up in Alton, IL, with his older sisters Janet and Joan, and his younger sister, Susie. Marshall loved hunting, fishing, hassling his little sister, and spending time at his beloved grandparents’ farm. He also excelled as a tackle for Alton High School’s varsity football team, where he met some of his lifelong friends.

Marshall was a proud veteran. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1965 and served until 1969. But nothing made him prouder than being a dad.

Melinda (Mindy), Stacie, and Laura were his greatest blessings, and Marshall was a total “girl dad.” He protected them. He had rules, and the girls knew to follow them. And while he was straightforward and strict, he also knew how to meet the moment with exactly the right words, warmth, and affection. Most importantly, Marshall made sure all the girls knew how to drive a stick shift! Every summer, you could catch him sitting at the same spot at Ballwin pool, watching the girls compete in swimming and diving meets. If he wasn’t poolside, he was teaching them to fish, dragging them to bluegrass festivals (whether they liked it or not), or welcoming all their neighborhood friends into his home, especially Marie.

While Marshall loved bragging about his daughters, he really loved bragging about his six grandkids: Jesse, Nick, Raegen, Brady, Brooke, and Landon. Whether it was their musical, athletic, or academic achievements, he never missed a chance to share everything they accomplished.

Most people have a few hobbies, but Marshall had many. His first love was fishing, especially for bass on Lake Texoma and Lake Taneycomo. He often made his famous bologna salad for those legendary fishing trips with his buddies (and boy did he have a lot of buddies). Marshall was also a music lover, especially country and bluegrass, and in his 40s, he decided to learn to play the banjo. He took weekly lessons and got really good. He also loved playing golf and enjoyed a good cigar anytime he was on the course. Upon retirement, he poured all his energy into hunting, especially in South Dakota, and riding his beloved Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Marshall traveled the eastern half of the country on his Road King Classic and loved sharing memories of the landscapes he discovered along the way.

When he wasn’t talking about his kids and grandkids, Marshall was talking about his friends. He kept in touch with friends from every decade of his life. They all knew him as the life of the party, whether they met in high school, the military, or during his nearly 30 years at American Family Insurance. He started at the company as a claims adjuster and worked his way up to managing the Customer Repair program there, building lasting friendships within the company and the St. Louis-area body shops. A countless number of these friends were at Marshall’s bedside during his final weeks. They shared tears, hilarious stories, and countless “I love yous.” It was a beautiful thing to witness.

The care at Solace Hospice House in O’Fallon, MO, was second to none. When Marshall decided to move there, dozens of family members and friends came to visit and show their love for him. Dozens more called or FaceTimed with him to say goodbye. We should all be so lucky to be so well cared for and deeply loved in our final weeks on earth.

Marshall is preceded in death by his treasured, eldest daughter, Mindy Gable; his sister, Joan Fryman; his brother-in-law, Virgil Fryman; his mother, Neva Dunn; and his father, Thoburn Moyer.
He is survived by his daughters, Stacie (Jason) Martin, Laura (Mike) Susic; his grandchildren, Jesse, Nick, Raegen, Brady, Brooke, and Landon; his sisters, Sue (John) Reinhardt and Janet Dunn, many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

We know Marshall is resting eternally, reunited with his precious Mindy. As he told many people who came to say goodbye, “I’ll save a seat for you in the boat.”

What a beautiful tribute to a life well lived, and an overall good guy. I treasure being his cousin, even though we didn’t spend much time together because of distance. Sending love to all his family and friends
