March 7, 1957 – July 13, 2026

Spencer Craig Schantz Jr. died suddenly on July 13, 2026, surrounded by his family, in Chesterfield, Missouri.  He was 69.

Craig was born on March 7, 1957, in Philadelphia to Spencer Craig Schantz Sr. and Wealthy Wittreich Schantz. He spent his childhood and youth in Oconomowoc, WI, where he developed the adventurous spirit that would characterize his life. Whether through a quick smile, a well-timed story, or his trademark expression— “What’s the matter with you?!”—he had a way of making those around him laugh and feel at home.

Craig attended Ripon College, where he studied technical theater and — more importantly — met the love of his life, Jill Duncan.   He later served honorably in the United States Army as a tank commander in West Germany (1978-1981).  

Craig spent several years in industrial sales (esp. ball bearings) before discovering the vocation that truly captured his heart: aviation. Becoming a pilot was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, and those who knew him could see the joy he found in flying.  If there was a happier man walking through an airport in uniform, no one ever met him.

He delighted in the things that made life rich: music and the arts, especially the songs of John Prine, whose wit, compassion, and storytelling resonated with him. He enjoyed motorcycles, camping, and the simple pleasure of being outdoors. More than any particular pastime, however, Craig loved sharing experiences with the people he cared about.

Even in death, Craig’s generosity continues.   He was an organ donor, and his kidneys were given to two grandfathers of a similar age. It was a final act of kindness that reflected the way he lived.  

Craig was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in University City, where he found friendship and a faith community.

Craig is survived by Jill, his wife of 47 years; his children, Karin, Carla, and Kyle; his grandson, Nevar Amador; his brother, Stuart (Nelle) Schantz; and his sister, Stacy (Jeff) Wilkins.  Many other relatives and dear friends will miss him greatly.

Craig requested that any remembrance of him be joyous and festive, not solemn.  The family will honor that wish on Saturday, August 1, at 4:00 p.m. at the Commons of Eden Theological Seminary in Webster Groves.  This celebration of Craig’s life will include a potluck meal, memorial reflections, music, and fellowship among those who loved him.  All are welcome.  The family has requested that donations in his memory be given to John Prine’s “Hello In There” foundation (thehellointherefoundation.org).
