Lemuel Russell was born on August 17, 1947, in Key West, Florida, to Mr. Joseph Russell and Mrs. Lydia Russell. He was the third of five children and was educated in the Key West School System.

Lemuel’s spiritual journey was deeply influenced by his nephew, James Sutton, who introduced him to the Adventist message. Listening to sermons by the late evangelist Dr. C.D. Brooks strengthened his convictions, leading to his baptism on September 21, 1987, at the Southernmost Seventh-day Adventist Church in Key West.

In 1997, Lemuel transferred his membership to Berean Seventh-day Adventist Church in St. Louis, Missouri. At Berean, he faithfully served as an Elder, Personal Ministries Leader, and Prison Ministry Leader—roles he embraced with dedication and compassion. He found joy in several hobbies, including bowling, table tennis, pool, and basketball.

After relocating to St. Louis, he worked for the University City Streets Department until 2015.  Upon retiring from University City, Lemuel embarked on a new chapter by starting his own lawn service business. What began as a simple venture quickly grew into his fulltime passion. He took great pride in his work, serving his community with the same commitment and care that defined every aspect of his life.

Among his cherished childhood memories was the tender love shown by his mother, who always set aside a chicken breast just for him whenever she prepared meals for her children. Lemuel cherished fellowship, especially with his family and church community. He loved hosting fish frys—most especially on his birthday—where laughter, good food, and warm connection filled the air. These gatherings became treasured moments that reflected his generous spirit and his joy in bringing people together.  Lemuel held close to his heart the scriptures Jeremiah 33:3 and John 15:1–5, and his favorite hymn, “I Surrender All.” His greatest desire was to see all his loved ones give their lives fully to Christ.

Lemuel was blessed to share his life with his devoted wife, Beverly Russell. He often reflected on the biblical promise, “He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord,” and considered himself abundantly favored. Together, they were blessed with a blended family of four children; five grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren.

He is survived by his three sisters: Evangeline Washington, Ethel Simmons, and Valerie McCain; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by both his parents and his brother, Joseph Russell Jr., who passed away in 2026.

Lemuel Russell lived a life of faith, service, and love. His legacy continues in the hearts of all who knew him.
