September 12, 1926 – September 4, 2026

Eleanor Schlafly Long (nee Byrne) passed away peacefully at the age of 99 on September 4, 2026. Eleanor was the last living of nine children of Dr. John H. and Anne (nee Wickham) Byrne (both deceased).

Divorced from August Schlafly II (deceased), Eleanor was the mother of six, to August III (Jeannie) Schlafly, John (Leigh Anne) Schlafly, Kay Schlafly (Kerstin Benya), Eleanor (Fred) Heger, Michael Schlafly, and Mark (Teresa) Schlafly. She was happily remarried later in life to Ralph J. Long (deceased). She became step mother to Cathy (Paul) Myre, Dan Long, Maureen (Ray) Long-Wilson, and Michael Long (deceased).

Along with 10 grandchildren, Eleanor also had 17 great grandchildren. Eleanor attended Loretto Academy for high school. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Fontbonne University, and later went back to school at night, obtaining a Master’s in Education at Webster University. Eleanor taught 2nd grade for over 20 years in the Parkway school district at Green Trails Elementary. She was beloved by students and parents alike.

Eleanor had many friends and loved socializing. She liked music, dancing, and attending parties. Her Catholic faith was a guiding principle while she raised six children as a single mother. We have deep gratitude for the care givers at Aberdeen Heights who have cared for Eleanor over the past 10 years.

When the Lord calls our loved ones home, he leaves a gift of memories in exchange.

Visitation will be Saturday, September 12 from 2:00-4:00 pm at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Road, Kirkwood, MO 63122.
