
James Rudolph Nelms 11/30/1931 – 9/7/2026
James R. Nelms (J.R.) of Chesterfield, MO passed away on September 7th, 2026 surrounded by his family.
Born in Brooklyn, Arkansas and raised in Baden, St. Louis, Missouri. James led a life of high integrity and success. In his youth he enlisted in the army and served his country well with a patriotic heart. He then earned his Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, and rose to the top of his trade as a Chemist with Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals.
James was a firm believer in continuing education throughout life. After retirement, he studied and passed his real estate exam and earned his tax preparation certificate through H&R Block. His advice although short and sweet, always sought after by those in need of direction or tough decision. He lived his life in full. As he said in his written words, “It has been one hell of a ride.” Irreplaceable in the hearts of those who loved him. He will surely and forever be missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Sybil Nelms, his beloved first wife Bernice Nelms, their daughter Renee Nelms, his beloved second wife Betty Nelms, his step-son Fred Box, and his beloved decade long companion Joan Goodwin.
He is survived by his sister Patricia J. Nelms and his daughter from his first wife, Deborah Mueller. He is also survived by his step-daughter DeLois from his first marriage, his step-children Lura, Paula, Paul and Rebecca, his step-grandchildren Monique, Nicole, David, Dakota, Ryan, Megan and Madeline, and step-great-grandchildren David Jr. and Calvin from his second marriage.
