John Backer
John Alphonsus Backer, age 68, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2026, fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathleen M. Backer (née Krieger); his parents, Howard and Theresa Backer; and his sisters, Theresa, Genevieve, Bobbie, and Donna.
He was the loving father of Charles (Kelly, née Schmidt) Backer and Joseph (Kennedy, née Jones) Backer; beloved “Paw-Paw” and “Papa John” to Carson, Noelle, Winnie, and Halle; and dear brother of Patsy, Michael, Julie, and Kathy.
John is also lovingly remembered by his longtime companion and dear friend, Glenda Seilnacht, with whom he shared many wonderful years and countless adventures. Her devoted care, especially in his final days, meant a great deal to John and his family.
John was happiest in nature, especially when he had a fishing pole in his hand. He enjoyed staying busy and was always finding something to work on. More than anything, John was known for his willingness to help others. Family, friends, and neighbors knew they could count on him, and he never hesitated to show up when someone needed him. He was immensely proud of his sons and the men they became, and few things brought him greater joy than being Paw-Paw and Papa John to his grandchildren. He showed his love not only in words, but in the countless things he did for the people he cared about.

I knew John as my daughter’s father-in-law and two of my grandchildren’s Paw Paw John. He was quick to smile and liked to do special things like surprising Kelly and Charlie on their wedding day with a bagpiper to lead the procession out of the church. He also jumped on the job of helping them paint their house when they bought it. He will be missed.Rest in peace to a fellow St. Mary’s Dragon.
To my twin, you will be greatly missed. Thank you for sharing almost 69 birthdays with me.
I want to express my deepest sympathy to Charlie and Joe and Glenda and thank you for taking such excellent care of John during his final weeks
