Jane “Janie” DuPort
Jane “Janie” DuPort, age 96, passed away June 16, 2013 in St. Louis. She was born May 27, 1917 in New York, New York to Mary Georges, nee Leader, and Josiah Georges, who both precede her in death.
Janie was a true New Yorker. She was born in Manhattan, New York and lived the majority of her life in Queens, living half of her life in Flushing and the other half in Jamaica. Her apartment in Rochdale Village was the most beautiful apartment in the whole complex, so beautiful that it looked like a museum. She and her sister, Olivia had designed everything in it.
Janie loved to shop in Manhattan, especially on Thursday evenings when the stores were open late. She was 72 years old when she retired from B. Altman’s, even then she had the desire to travel two hours on the bus to shop in Long Island.
When Janie was 87 years old, she was moved to St. Louis by her granddaughter, Dr. Rochelle Catus. Her granddaughters wanted to have her close and assist in any care she needed.
Janie lived independently until the age of 94. She moved into an assisted living facility and stayed there until she departed this life.
Janie was the oldest of five children. She is preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Leonard DuPort, daughter, Betty Jean DuPort Goring, parents Mary and Josiah Georges, three sisters, Olivia Phillips, Frances Georges, and Evelyn Whitney, one brother, Stanley Georges, and nephew Mark Georges (son of Evelyn).
She is survived by her granddaughters, Sharon Hawthorne and Rochelle G. Catus, MD, niece, Sandra Georges Johnson (John), great niece, Dana Johnson, great nephew, Bradley Johnson, niece in law Lorraine Reed (Uriel) and her children, Lauren, Courtney, and Matthew, and Courtney’s children, Hunter and Iona Pearl.
Janie lived everyday with style and grace. She leaves behind many friends and loved ones and will be dearly missed.
