Barbara Derington
Barbara Jo Derington (nee Buehner) left this world September 4, 2013 after a brief stopover at Sherbrooke Village Skilled Nursing facility, St. Louis. She was 71.
She was the only child of Wilma Beatrice (Bea) Buehner (nee Casey) and John Hubert (Hugh) Buehner.
Hugh was a geologist and fostered in Barb an intellectual curiosity of the world and those in it. Bea was a homemaker and writer and Barbara certainly followed her path.
In 1966, she graduated from the University of Miami, Ohio, with her Masters in Psychology. Like many of her generation, she accepted President Kennedy’s challenge to make a difference, joined the Peace Corps and headed for Tunisia where she taught English to French-speaking boys. She often spoke of her adventures there and of her subsequent travels throughout Europe.
Her professional life included copywriting for such St. Louis institutions as Home Federal Savings, Stix Baer and Fuller, and Christian Board of Publication.
Her world turned upside down in 1999 after the sudden passing of the love of her life—her husband Jack, whom she married in 1979.
She will be remembered for her sharp intellect and unique sense of humor. She was a voracious lover of reading, especially mysteries; an avid writer, golfer, gardener, and cook, and loved to create original sewn and embroidered works.
She is survived by her aunt Dorothy Casey of Kokomo, Indiana; cousins, friends and kind neighbors.
She now dances in the cosmos and we wish her joy.
